Looking at a house that's in a subdivision where all the houses have vinyl. I noticed a lot of the seams and it took away IMO of the appearance of quality, even though the house is in excellent condition. I know of at least one development that has covenants that forbid vinyl siding, so I sort of agree it's a big negative in terms of appearance of quality. I also noticed on this house that the trim, which is vinyl, appears somewhat bowed. Clearly vinyl isn't as stiff as OSB or wood trim. Thoughts?

sounds like the siding was poorly installed.(the bowed siding) i agree the appearance of vinyl isnt as appealing, but is is much less upkeep, and a lesser cost.
I like quality vinyl but not cheap vinyl. Vinyl siding must be installed where the seams face in the correct direction so you can not see it. Not sure how to explain this....... Standing in the street looking at the sides of the house you want the laps to overlap facing the rear. In otherwords you dont want to see the end grain facing the street. If dont correcty then you will barely see any seams.
I had vinyl put on my new house in 2001. The house is a small contemporary, so there's no need to copy "colonial" methods as other houses do. The builder wanted me to have "real" siding, saying, you only have to paint every five or seven years, and it's a couple of thousand dollars.
Well, here it is eight years later, I don't have to paint. The builder keeps painting his house and recently said that he wished he'd had vinyl siding on his traditional house.
I do think it's better on a more contemporary house, but it looks fine. I'm very happy with it.
