Hi,
question arised in the process of kitchen floor renovation. After ripping off 2 layers of the old vinyl we found the half inch of the old rotten wood. It is very difficult to take off, because it nailed to hardwood floor underneath. My handyman suggested to leave this wood layer and spill over it the fine layer of special concrete, to make the surface smooth and then lay vinyl.
But I think about all this rotten wood which will be permanently incapsulated in cement- if it will not detoriate inside in the future, together with hardwood floor under it?If this technology sounds right? Please, share your opinion.

NO NO NO NO NO !

If you leave rotten wood under anything......well what happens? Rotten wood is a sponge right? And that useless idiot wants to put cement or thinset over rotten spongy wood? Oh that autta go over big. Walk on the new flooring and all that new cement thinset material will crumble into rubble.

Do me a favor. Lose your size 11 shoe up his azz and call the oink oinks if he dont leave in a hurry.

Do it right and remove all that flooring and sub flooring. If you feel like it's too hard then buy yourself what they call a cats claw. With this tool you can remove all the nails quite easily. I doubt trying to pry up rotten wood would work because all the nails would just pull right through it while sticking in the old hardwood floor below it.

Time for a new handyman!

Grab your circular saw, set it to 1/2", then cut out the rotten subfloor. Nailed down won't be hard to pull up, just use a prybar on the nails. Plus, if its rotten it will just crumble up. Cut a piece of new 1/2" plywood the size you need, and plop it into place.

Kick that handyman to the curb, he doesn't know sh*t or else he's just a lazy handyman. Like everyone else said, never ever leave rotten wood in the house. Go out and buy yourself a Sawzall and start cutting that wood out of there. Use a combination blade for wood with nails so that you can go through whatever is there. Make sure first that you don't have plumbing or electrical lines that are in the way.

Good luck!

You need to be yelling that as you put boot to butt and show your "handyman" the door.

Fire the handyman and get rid of the rotten wood as everyone else has advised.

The guy is either stupid or lazy. You do not want either type of person working in your house!

Take away his tools.
Then fire him.
He is too stupid to be allowed to ever work on a house again.
The only thing you should ever do with rotten wood is REMOVE IT.

Maybe run over him with his truck for good measure.

And finally:

Print this page with our advice and hold it in front of his ugly face. When he is done reading it then shove it up his azz.
