It wll depend on the damper system, the smoke shelf and whether the fireplace itself has to be pierced. Mine is in such a position that the brick would have to be taken out.

I have the same problem. I just bought a house and the fireplace is missing a damper. Where can I get one?

You don't have to disturb the brick or pierce anything. A top mount damper gets installed at the top of the chimney. It's a cap and damper combined. Very common.

The home inspector didn't tell you this??
