I bought some bags of salt to refill my water softener tank. Then I went downstairs and I can't figure out how to open the tank. The tank is a thing that kind of looks like a big plastic capsule.

There seems to be some sort of cap, but it's on really tightly. Am I supposed to un scr@w it or try to pry it off? There are also some tubes in the side. I tried to look this up on the internet, but no luck.

If anyone can tell me how I am supposed to do this, I'll be forever grateful.

No don't unscew the cap on your capsule.......sounds like that is your pressure tank. Find out where those tubes are leading to and there should be another large container to put your salt in.

I think the pressure tank may be the other thing. There is a blue capsule that seems to be made of some sort of metal, then there is a big capsule-ey thing that is see-through. The well/septic guy told me that I would have to fill that back up, and I can see some salt in it (at a very low level now ha ha ha). I jus dunno howta get it open

What the brand name and model? You may be able to search and find the operators manual on-line.

I thought those just pop off? Could it be that it hasn't been opened for awhile it may have "ceased" up a bit?

Your softner should basically look something like this:
http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/4896492/158356-main_Full.jpg (broken link)

The larger diameter tank on the right is the one where the salt goes. It doesn't have to be sitting right next to the softner itself, but it should be fairly close.

It is remotely possible that you have an old "brine tank" style softner. Culligan used those, but they were more for commercial applications. Essentially, the Culligan guy comes about once per month with a refilled tank and swaps it out for you. I doubt that's what you have, but it is possible.

Be careful!

I did it! Thanks, my tank looks like the picture except it's all slightly-opaque whitish plastic. I did just "pop" off the top. Now I need like 6 more bags of salt, but I am so happy!
