I think about this every time I load the dishwasher. My life is not complete until I get this answer!

Do you put the forks, knives, and spoons facing down or up?

I don't have and never read an owners manual so I don't know if that is even covered in them. Probably doesn't even matter but I think about this when food is dried on or I am putting say something like one of thoes long spoons (the ones with like a 12"-16" handle) and it has cheese from my latest macaroni on it.

I put the spoons and forks facing upwards but the knives facing down for safety reasons.

I lay long utensils sideways on the top rack.

I'd just like to clarify that shoving utensils downward hinders the ability of the jet water to get into the little basket to clean the utencils.

I only put sharp utensils downward because safety comes first.

It's also important to mix the knives, spoons and forks so they don't stick together.

Knives down.

Forks and spoons up.

I had a friend get cut pretty badly by a knife sticking up - that cured me of my previous knife up habit.

Your life is now complete - enjoy!

Yeah, I put knives down too for safety, and everything else up because it looks like they'd get cleaner with the eating part sticking out of the basket. This is my totally unscientifically proven theory, lol.

My toddler sister grabbed a steak knife in the dishwasher and permanently cut the tendons of a couple of fingers.

That was about 43 years ago. So I put the steak knives down, spoons and forks, up.

I divide them by type so they're easy to put away. I separate the spoons because...they like to spoon.

My stuff goes UP! However, after I stuck myself with a sharp knife, I decided I would hand wash all sharp knives.

Here's my logic:
1. I am very careful with my good knives and don't want the edges banging on others, so they would never go in a dishwasher.
2. Sharp ends down with any sharp knive can/will nick the plastic coating of the rack, and sooner or later will cause the metal to rust.

Me too, as said above....knives downward, forks & spoons upwards after rinsing off food. I always handwash good knives and dry thoroughly immediately, and never, ever put sterling silver in the dishwasher. You can relax now!!

Count me in on the sharp knives downward (not butter knives though) and everything else up.

That's a very good idea about pointing the sharp knives downward... in our dishwasher, everything is always pointing up, even the sharp stuff. I've never been cut either from it. It'll probaby happen one day and then I'll start pointing them down... Interesting question!
