I think my lawn has Chinch bugs. I need Talstar to kill them. Any idea where can I purchase this. I live in North West Houston. Best buy does not carry TALSTAR.

TALSTAR is a restricted use pesticide and therefor it should not be used by someone that does not have a chemical applicators license from the TDA and in your case a turf and ornamental certification in addition to the general license or a license through the structural pest control board

you may find it online and be allowed to order it, but it will not be available in any general retail outlet

if you can order it online and actually have it delivered to you then you still need to have a 12 hour REI for what ever property you treat and you will need to post signs stating what you sprayed, the time of application and the REI for that application

if you can find it and order it online without a license you will still be taking a great risk of the neighbors see you spraying and complain to the TDA or the structural pest control board and you may be risking a large fine from them and worse if you have "fainting" type neighbors

TALSTAR does only have a "caution" on the label (VS "warning" and "danger") which means it is in the lowest class of toxicity of any chemicals

it has been years and years since I sprayed any TALSTAR so I can't remember how bad or not bad it smells to tell you whether or not the neighbors will see you spraying, smell it, and complain

last year we were con'd by the HOA to treat chinch bugs in the whole neighborhood. they used pellets and there was no smell. I dont think it helped, if there was any issue at all. its obvious the folks with bad grass use lawnboys who cut too low or had dull blades that yanked the grass, and dont water enough. it cost us $55

Products containing diazinon, chlorpyrifos (Dursban®), or acephate (Orthene®) are suggested for homeowner applications. Chinch bugs have been reported with resistance to the above products in some areas of Florida; however, this has not been apparent in Texas. Where any of these products fail to provide control, apply a synthetic pyrethroid such as permethrin (e.g., Spectracide® Liquid Insecticide Spray).

Watering well is the best prevention. If you do find yourself with an infestation you have several choices for control. Any product with .02% bifenthrin granules will kill them and prevent reinfestation for about 2 months. For organic gardeners Organicide is a brand name of a fish and sesame oil that will kill chinch bugs on contact.
