The growth of the port = really good news for the city because in 2014 the Panama channel/canal (sorry I'm not sure of the translation) will be larger, and Obama wants to double exports in 5 years..And Texas is the first exporter state in the US !
^^ Yeahh that's what the article I read stated. Because of the Panama Canal expansion being completed and open in 2014.

Port of Los Angeles by itself isn't larger than Port of Houston, but Port of Long Beach & Port of Los Angeles combined are one of the top three most important ports in the country. Los Angeles is still regarded as the most important port/trade city in America.

Only New Orleans (Southern Louisiana combined ports) are larger than Houston, and they're not growing nearly fast enough to keep their rank.

I'm not sure about that, but apparently the Corpus Christi's port is growing quickly too.

Question? How is it not more globally significant when the port of Houston gets significantly more foreign tonnage?

If the Governor wins again, and gets his TTC the ports in Texas and LA will be kaput. Those goods will come into Mexico and trucked north.

There are still plenty of natives around. Maybe not in the planned communities, but everywhere else. I would contrast it to Atlanta around 20 years ago where it became a magnet for the entire East Coast - - and natives were very hard to find in that immediate metro area.
