You know what. I don't know why it seems that Houston is so much smaller than DFW. I guess it's because Houston doesn't have so many large suburbs.

lol it would be nice if we had neigbouring counties with populations of almost 2 million like Tarrant county, or 700 000 like Collin county, or 650 000 like denton County. Harris County has over 4 Million people, the 10 or so other counties in the metro make up the other two million people.

outside of the central part of the Houston metro is pretty sparse

Greater Houston has only one city with a pop over 200 000, and that is Houston itself. DFW has 6: D, FW, Garland, Arlington, Irving and Plano. Grand Praire will be there soon making it 7.

I have always said all those neighboring cities help the DFW statistics. Houston really does manage as a stand alone metro area. Most of the really large metro areas get help from alot of large neighboring municipalities.

Katy really needs to get incorporated. I think it so rural there.

The Katy area. I don't know why I think it's rural.

The Katy area does have some very rural areas, but also has some very developed areas.

Old Katy (the city) is really tiny

Because you've never been here (Texas)? The only rural areas of Katy that I can think of are way out west past Katy Mills Mall.

It seems that way to you? Houston is only about 500K smaller than DFW. Less than the population of Fort Worth. Plus, the Houston area feels bigger than DFW, despite having a smaller population. Have you been to either place before? What are you basing this all on?

The only cities helping out DFW are Dallas and Fort Worth. Each is a major city in their own right and each were two distinct metro areas until the 80s. Even to this day, there are big differences. For example, it is long distance to call from Fort Worth to Dallas and vice versa, newspaper subscriptions, area codes (76--- for FW and 75--- for Dallas), etc. The suburban cities are just a product of the two larger cities in the area. Houston is like Dallas and Fort Worth rolled into one, with the entire metro area revolving around it. In DFW, the area doesn't revolve around Dallas or Fort Worth. It depends on where you live.
