Hi everyone,
My hubby just got a job in Houston and we are planning to move to Houston in January 2011. We just got back yesterday from a visit for one week in Houston & we will love to move to Katy or Sugarland.

We have two young kids in 2 & 4 grades and finding a good school for them will determine where we will live. They are both attending a private christian school in our state right now but we plan to put them in a public school when we get to TX. We plan to rent for 6mons and buy a house before the end of next year. We can afford a rent of $2500/mon
.
I went to Stanley & kilpatrik in Katy and they are both good schools but did not get to visit any school in Sugarland. I will like someone that can tell me more about this two schools. I am looking for a school where they can be acedamically chanllenged because they are both gifted kids

I will appreciate your advice and opinion on a good elementary school in Sugarland or katy.

Both Kilpatrick & Stanley in Katy are good schools. Kilpatrick has been crowded from day one, and Stanley which just opened last year is already over capacity at 1150 students.

Future schools will have to be built in this area to relieve the overcrowding... And that will mean some students will have to rezone to new schools. If you can handle that and the growing pains along the way, Great! Otherwise I would look at schools east of 99 if staying in south Katy.

The GT program in Katy Isd is all the same by school. It is a once a week program called Challenge. My 3 girls go to Stanley (previously Griffin before the rezone) but are not gifted (except in Mommy's eyes) but you could contact the district about their challenge program

Best of luck!

Expect for your kids to become just a number at any of these schools down here.

They are overcrowded and kids are being put into study halls so they can have "more time to finish their homework." All that means is the schools are not big enough to serve the students and there is not enough money for more teachers to be hired.

Moreover, many of these schools have classrooms that have no windows. Basically, your child may not see the sun from whenever they start school until they get out. That's the cost of cheap living down here.

What school is that? Elementary? My kids have never had a study hall.

Now the architecture of Kilpatrick/Griffin/Stanley is that some classes are on the outer wall (windows) and a few are on the interrior... with the hallway like a racetrack. Some are inside the donut, some are outside the donut. But good grief! Out of 3 children, none of mine have ever had school issues because they were in an interior class vs an outer walled ("windowed") class.

I'd like to know where else you've lived that the schools were so spectacular. Because in my travels EVERYONE (in the US anyways) is beefing about their public school is some fashion. Complaining about an interior classroom seems mighty petty in comparison. I've heard of charging textbook fees, art/music cancelled, buildings falling apart in disrepair, massive teacher layoffs, grafitti, violence... none of which are prevelant in KISD. Is it perfect? No, but seriously, not THAT bad.

Get a grip!

No, junior highs and high schools.

Second of all, your kids probably had no issues with that because they were never in school buildings with windows all around them. Natural sunlight goes a long way when you're inside. Oh, and that reminds me. As far as I know, all of Katy's high schools have a closed campus policy. This means that students are not allowed to leave the school for any reason throughout the day, something which to me seemed really strange and unnecessary when I first came here.

Here's where I lived previously: Bellevue, Washington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All of its high schools are in the Top 100 nationwide and the district's AP program is one of the best as well.

Moreover, I was never required to go out and buy books (like in Katy), and I have never, ever had a teacher say something inappropriate to me or to one of my classes. Now I'm at Taylor (last year...finally) and inappropriate jokes made by teachers are nothing out of the ordinary. Oh, and I was also charged a textbook fee for a textbook I did not lose. Why? Because this school district still uses "textbook cards" instead of bar codes to keep track of its textbooks.

I'm just sharing my experiences as a high school student in Katy. If you want, listen to my experiences. If not, I'm sure you can find a button on here to block me.

Sorry you feel that way. I know Bellevue much thank you. I grew up in Washington State . Could never afford to live in that city.

My school was so poor we recieved used textbooks from wealthier districts. That or the teachers, would take a text freebie and make photocopies of it. Want to learn French? Russian? Chinese? Had to take on satellite TV from Anchorage, AK.

My math teacher was the town drunk. Physics & Calculus alternated years in which they were offered. They couldn't be offered in the same year. I graduated with a 3.8 GPA (mind you AP courses not even offered!) and when I went to Eastern Washington University I had to take remedial math. Not because I was stupid, but because I was poorly educated.

But hey! I had a window!

See, I could dump on Washington schools too.

No doubt. I could list many things wrong with most Washington schools as well.

I guess I was just lucky enough to attend exceptional schools while there and also have the chance to graduate from one of the best high schools in the area.

Just about all of the elementary schools in Sugar Land are good.
Even as you go northwest of Sugar Land to places with "Richmond" addresses all up the Grand Parkway/99 until you hit Cinco/Katy, all of those are good too.

Where will work be? That's a factor in Houston because of commutes.

Goto Sugar Land, FBISD will treat your children well regardless of race, color.religion, status, etc. District is probably one of the most ethnically diverse school districts in the nation.

stay away from this pervert in katy -KISD . hope he is the only one

Thanks for all your great replies!

I went into Standley and I totally agreed with descovy that the school is great and see nothing wrong with their windows. I was also inform about the Wednesday weekly programm for gifted kids. My concern about katy is that there is too much construction going on & the houses are so close together especially in WESTHEIMER LAKES NORTH

I have read about cornerstone on HAR and drove past Rita Darby while we are in TX.

I'll like more contributes about elememtary schools in Sugar Land. If you have kids in Sugar Land elementary school or just move to sugarland. Kindly share your experience

We are not worried about commute but finding a school for the kids is really a priority on our list. My hubby can work from home every other week

Thanks
