No I am not surrounded by poverty, but there is poverty in Pearland. It is different because back home poverty is concentrated in certain towns or cities. You can't find a town or city with no poverty in Texas.

If you drive to Disney World from here and take the 'scenic route,' some of that sprawl way northwest of Orlando comes close. Just not as densely populated and nowadays that part of FL housing is a bit cheaper than Pearland's.

I'll be moving to Pearland in a few months, have family there now. Have friends all over the Harris County area and always hear how awesome 'this place' is and how much 'that place' sucks. Depending on who I talk to, 'this' and 'that' are interchangeable. I grew up in the country in another state, so suburb rivalry is a newer concept for me. It does remind me of high school rivalries, which I'm just too old for. I love the Heights, some people hate it and I'm sure they could make a good argument to support their opinion. Lots of people HATE HISD, but I'm so sad to be leaving some of the best schools in the state. Every place has ugly, every place has shiny. None of the areas around here, or any other state I've ever been to has widespread beauty and perfection and since most people know that, what's the point of mentioning it?
I will say that I've been watching this board a lot lately looking into areas and there are some really proud Pearlandians and that's the kind of place I like to be in, I don't care what the Lowe's looks like.
I'm not trying to be self righteous because I'm actually pretty opinionated myself, but this original post stuck out because I've been impressed with the more positive things mentioned about Pearland.

We all get old and move on to simpler lifestyles. It's ok.
Obviously the OP was just shocked thinking Pearland would have the MPC all over it

Sigh..........Too bad people can't understand before they move here that Houston is not known as a pretty city with beautiful landscape. It is a city built on bayous known for an outstanding medical center, affordable housing in good neighborhoods, and opportunities for those who WANT to work hard. If you can move here with that knowledge then you have gotten what you came here for and you find the things you like/love about the city and utilize/enjoy them.

I grew up in Pearland when it was more of a small town feel and I miss it being that way but that's just one person's opinion. Everyone is so eager to move there and turn it into another glorified tract home community with good proximity to Houston and strip malls on every corner and then complain because it looks like everything else. And there are those who hate the small town feel and are glad to see it finally strip malled out.
