Wow - 20 miles from downtown took about 3 hours. I'm a native Houstonian and have seen presidents come and go on these fundraising tours and this was the absolute worst I have ever seen in tying up traffic on every major freeway. What a disaster.

45 minutes was just to get out of the downtown area.

My traffic was rain related rather than due to Obama.

I needed to use 45 south. No dice. What I noticed is that every freeway that intersected with 45 S was backed up for miles because of people on other freeways trying to merge onto a freeway that wasn't moving so everyone just gridlocked. Absolute nightmare.

People need to make better use of the surface roads

Yeah - they were backed-up for miles as well with people getting off the freeway and trying to use them. That is what made it a nightmare - there wasn't anything you could do to move. The city did a very poor job of this task.

It was bad due to the rain well before Obama caused 45 to be shut down.

Left Jersey Village area at 3:30pm, took the tollway south to I-45 South. Hit I-45 around 5:15pm. Arrived at destination in Webster around 5:45pm.

I-45 South wasn't shut down due to Obama, just North.

I would imagine that had to do more with his final destination as I-45 S itself was still open, unlike 45 N.

As far as the city doing a poor job with this...there isn't much that they can do. They have to close roads and have no option but to do it when they are told. I lived in Austin when Clinton came there a couple times and it wasn't any better with SH-71 and IH-35 being closed for a time during rush hour. At least when GW came for fundraising a few years ago he took a helicopter from Ellington to Sugarland and didn't have to close any major roads.
