Hi!

My husband and I visited Houston about four years ago, with the intention of relocating there. We really liked what we saw and the people we met were really friendly. But due to family circumstances, we had to postpone. Well both of my children are in their last year of college, so we are now revisiting the idea and would love some advice.

We are both in our early 40's. He is in retail management and I am in technical support. I was laid off from my last position. We would love to eventually buy a small home, but would first rent an apartment for about a year to learn more about the area. We are avid bowlers so there must be at least 2-3 bowling alleys in close proximity.

As I mentioned, we are supporting two kids in college, so our budget is very tight. I am willing to sacrifice whatever I have to in order to leave these cold winters behind

1. I would leave about 1-2 mos before my husband. I am currently receiving unemployment and he will remain working until he leaves, so our income would be ok while I search for a job.

2. Since it is hard trying to secure permanent work from out of state, I am thinking of using a temp service and staying in an extended stay hotel while I job search. That way my husband can also have an in-town address for his job search.

3. Our budget for rent is 700-1000. It could be a studio since it's just for me and hubby.

Any suggestions or advice on the tentative plan? What about an area to start my search in? Thanks in advance.

I grew up in Michigan and moved around a bit. I moved here to Houston four years ago from Chicago. I got an address at UPS, which isn't a PO box. They use real street addresses. It looks better on the resume. There are brand new homes here for $150,000 (3 bed/2 bath), which would definitely be in your budget. The extended stay is good until you find out where your going to work. Once you figure that out, then you can go for the housing next. Houston is massive and a trip on I-10 going east in the morning can be a nightmare. So, if your working in the energy corridor, then you want to try to stay close by. I used Indeed to help search for jobs too.
