Check lease options on the map search function of HAR.com, that's where we found our current rental. I'm not sure it has all the apartment listings but it does show 3 brm town homes in 77079 at around $1250 zoned to great schools. You may have to go further out to get the budget and good school combination. Houston's so big though (read - spread out), you really need to figure out where you want live and work before looking for a place or at least try a short term lease in case you don't like the area or complex.

Of course by renting you can pick the elementary district (I made an assumption here) and not have to worry about the middle school, you can always move later. That might open up some options closer in.

$1000 is not a problem at all in the city. The problem would be finding a neighborhood that is safe at that price.

There's a walmart opening up in the heights/rice military area. Find a roomate and rent a two bedroom near there.

I can't imagine living on $1,000 a month. You might have a place to live, and some food, but not much else. Ride the bus to get around?
