I agree with JJG above. Traffic is not really any different here than any other part of the Houston metro area. The 290 can be difficult during rush hours, but same can be said for any other highway in Houston. Cypress is Houston's last best kept secret.

Not much of a secret. Especially to PVAMU students who basically spend half their paychecks there.

I know it's not an established city, but I consider it the gateway town into Houston for 290. I like it because it reminds me of my neighborhood back home.

Understatement of the year. Worst freeway, other than 610 in Uptown, during rush hour in the metro. And frankly it can be a b*tch at random times during the day as well. Traffic in this city is getting worse every month with the growing population, so what is a long commute now can only get longer....every single year.

Bad as in crime? No, never heard that.

But that stretch of 610 is only a couple of miles long... The bad part of 290 is several miles. Once you get up there the traffic isn't bad, it's the part of 290 inside Houston that's a joke.

Cypress isn't a bad area, nice houses, safe community... except for traffic!! I used to live in the Cypress area and when my job moved to the Galleria area, I moved as well! I couldn't stand 290 traffic... I think an hour long (each way) commute is way too ridiculous. By far 290 is one of the worst congested freeways in North America!

If 290 ever expands to drastically reduce traffic, I'd actually consider moving back out to Cypress.

Unless it's preceded by word "Traffic"

OP, if you'd like to know how bad traffic is, I suggest you drive from Bltway to 610 to 59 at around 7:45 am. Some of my friends who live out that area come to work at 6 or 6:30am and leave at 3pm, that's how they keep their sanity.

When I think sitting in traffic on 290 is bad, I always switch my thoughts to I-35 in Austin to remind myself that it could be worse.

290 is what kept us from looking seriously at Cypress; all other factors such as schools, new houses, lot size, etc, were great, but that commute down 290 into downtown... no thanks.
