If you're in an area that used to be rural that is now being developed, then I'd agree with you 100%. A developed burb on the other hand.... well, browse through these lists:

Restaurants in Sugar Land - B4-U-EAT

Restaurants in Clear Lake - B4-U-EAT

Restaurants in The Woodlands - Spring - B4-U-EAT

The crappy places come & go but the established ones make it un-necessary to do any "commute" to go out to eat. Unless you're trying to go exotic, or expand past the semi-high-end places in your burb. Or if you want to bask in the radience of today's trendy crowd.

Look at the reviews on Yelp. I always go there first before going out to eat.

You need to go into the good restaurant districts. montrose, upper kirby, galleria area, international district, westchase. Houston is the best food city in the country. being in Missouri city you are not far from it. read through the chronicle blogs or the free press for food reviews.

All of the places in the Galleria area and some around Upper Kirby, whether chain or not, are in mass production mode. For as long as I've worked there, I haven't found anything that stands out above and beyond what I can find near the house. For medium-priced places and @ lunch anyway.

Also read some of the comments on the Chronicle blog... that blog riles up the most disagreement I've ever seen.

Yelp reviewers are idiots for the most part.

I don't really trust yelp either. IMO Yelp and Zillow are equally reliable as far as Houston goes.

As far as food goes, I bring my Montrose/inner-looper & SW side friends and let them decide.
