Anyway, it seems developers are caught between trying to be aggressive and build build build yet at the same time worried that our economy is going to double dip. So they plan some huge project and then settle for the lower budget version. I have seen this now on so many projects where ultimately they break ground, but they settle for something half as big or half as nice as was originally planned. Houston is in this awkward spot of being a good house on a bad block. I think if the economy across the US as a whole starts to pick up, then maybe these developers won't keep downsizing these projects.

Have you been to Coconut Grove in Miami? Same thing.

In other words, you want to replace one form of "consumerism" with another? Remove one department store to bring in a sea of chains?

That sounds more appropriate for the Galleria; not downtown.

I've been to Horton Plaza a few times while I was stationed near SD. It's just an outdoor mall, no?

Mayor Parker Kicks Off 2013 with Downtown Retail Task Force Creation

Statement from Mayor Parker sounds a bit more optimistic but could just be fluff. Still, some interesting information.

Well, anything that costs money is going to fall under consumerism no? I'm not sure a public library is the best thing to put in there. And I never said anything about a sea of chains. Just something interesting. Something that if I was flying into Houston on business and staying downtown, I might venture over there. Or if I worked downtown, I might actually stay there after work and meet someone for a drink. Come on, get creative.

Yes, but it's an outdoor mall that more accurately represents San Diego. It's next to the famous Gas Lamp district that is full of cool bars and restaurants. Do you think if that area had a large stuffy indoor mall it would be as fun and successful? The Mall of America works in Minnesota because it's -50 there in the winter. People live in doors. So they created this huge mall that was not just for shopping but had an amusement park inside and all sorts of other things since people there don't like to be out in the cold. That concept works in MN, probably would not work well in LA.

That was a great store when it opened. Three restaurants, and a very upscale women's department, The Chrystal Room. Foley's response to Neiman's. There were 2 clothing stores, Battelstein's and a Sakowitz across the street. They closed up shop years ago.

The ladies who worked there were uncomfortable not being able to see outside. I'd go in on Saturday's to have lunch with my mom. Every employee I passed inquired about the weather
