My 5 years old daughter is accepted to two HISD school - Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion School (MCLIMS), and Parker Elementary.

MCLIMS provides 50%-50% Chinese and English immersion program, While Parker has the best musical program (my daughter is in Cello Suzuki program).

I speak Chinese. Both my husband and I are illiterate in music. We want our daughter to learn both Chinese and Cello, but we can only pick one school. I can teach her Chinese, and also find private Cello lessons for her, but I know she will be more interested in learning ( either Chinese or Cello) if she learns in groups along with other kids in her class.

Please share your experience in this regards.

In my opinion, you should probably go Parker. Reason being, she can apply to T.H. Rogers. Once she's in, if she continues to be great at the performing arts, she can apply for HSPVA (Houston school for the performing and visual arts). She would be able to stay at Rogers until 8th.

Edit: Of course she could do this regardless, but Paker -> Rogers would make more sense. In fact, if you do choose Parker, try to get into Rogers.

I would also add that MCLIMS is a new school. Opened in 2012. No solid reports on the performance yet.

+1 for you. Kind of a small detail I left out.

Do read the website carefully, OP. I had even forgotten they were going to be K-8 and here I am steering you towards Rogers for middle.

Is there a big difference in driving distance? I wouldn't underestimate the hassle that a long drive to school will add to your life.

Hard to compare the two schools when one is so new. I am willing to bet that your child will learn cello far better at Parker than in private lessons. Parker's cello teacher is amazing and with so many kids doing music, they WANT to do it because their friends are, and they get competitive about who is passing what song. It's a good motivator!

Maybe just choose the school that feels better to you overall, and feel good that your child will learn a great skill either way.
