Anyone have experience with the John Cooper School? Other than being expensive (sheesh!), is it a good education? Too much pressure? Good experience?

Thanks!

It has a very good reputation. John Cooper, who was a headmaster at Kinkaid, started the John Cooper School up in The Woodlands. It is the closest thing you will find to St. John's or Kinkaid in the northern part of town. Their college admissions and SAT scores speak for themselves.

We have known several students from John Coper. It was worth a long commute to the families and students.

It is a good school, but make sure your child is ready for the academic expectations. I did not see much effort to pull-up those who struggled. Socially, was very open and inviting.

Looking to see if anyone has any current experience with John Cooper? I know it is in The Woodlands, but otherwise how would it compare to top schools like Kinkaid or SJS in terms of workload, opportunities for students, etc.

I've read the Cooper literature including where grads go and it sounds good. Looking for opinions on this board.

Thanks!

I have several friends whose kids went to Cooper. It is very much a sibling to Kinkaid in many respects. Heavy academic work load and a reasonable selection of extracurricular activities. They have not fielded a football team consistently, due to insufficient interest many years. When they do field a team, it tends to fare badly. Adjectives used to describe Cooper include: affluent, challenging, secular and materialistic (the latter coming from a Cooper parent).

The two kids I know who have actually graduated went on to Georgia Tech (for computer science), and Vanderbilt. Another flamed out from a combination of academic pressure and substance abuse during high school but still went on to earn an engineering degree from UT.

For kids what age? Would you be living in Woodlands?

For what it is worth, there was a recent ranking of private schools (in the last month) for the entire state of Texas, and I believe John Cooper came in at number ten. Pretty good for a suburban private competing with a strong public school district.

Those Niche rankings are imperfect to say the least:
1) they do not include every school (Second Baptist appears to be missing for example. That's one of the largest PK-12 schools in the Houston area)
2) they rely upon internet reviews
3) they use factors like subjective diversity ratings in their overall rankings
