Hi All,
I'm new here!
I've seen a lot of different threads on here about private schools and parents asking which ones to send their kids to.
I just wanted to share my experiences with St. John's School (SJS).
All 5 of my kids have attended/are attending. 3 graduated and 2 are currently are in the upper school. All were lifers, except my oldest child who entered in 1st grade.
SJS is truly an amazing place... The faculty, the atmosphere, everything about the school is wonderful.
The community is accepting AND one will not be judged for not having "enough money" as might be the norm at other schools. My kids had many many friends who were on scholarship, and the only way my kids knew they were was they they shared that with each other.

That being said, I definitely wouldn't apply to SJS only because you want your kids to go to any Ivy League. First of all, going to SJS definitely doesn't guarantee you a spot. 2 out of my 3 kids who graduated went to Ivy Leagues, and the other went to Rice. I would say out of 140 kids in each grade, maybe 20-25 go to Ivy's with another 30 going to top rate schools such as Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Stanford, etc. BUT, the other 100 may go to the same place as kids graduating from EHS, Kinkaid.
SJS does give you an absolutely amazing education, however, and many kids say that they find college easier than SJS.

I just thought that I'd share this soon before the admission decisions come out (March 13/14). I'm excited to hear and I hope everything goes well for everyone; feel free to PM me with questions.

Thanks!

What they need is the kids of legacies that contribute, that they have been denying lately for the sake of diversity the past few years.

I gotta laugh at the Ivy League stuff though. I saw the list of where a MAJORITY of the kids are going. Still an awesome prep school, but take it all with a grain of salt.

No, I definitely agree.
Some years are MUCH better than others in terms of Ivy League acceptance Rates. For examples '13 kids didn't really do so well where as '12 kids had over 30 kids go to Ivy's and Stanford/MIT. So it really depends on the kids in the year and the colleges!

Yeah, like the lady who moved from a 200k house in Pearland to a 10 million dollar house in River Oaks so her son could be close to to St. Johns for his scholarship...that was a good one.

I have a funny Ivy League story. I went to a public high school and then to a private, excellent liberal arts school. I then went to geology field camp one summer through UPenn, along with a bunch of students from the Ivies. I found it hilarious that the Harvard geology students had no idea how to use a Brunton Compass when we were out in the field (any geologists reading this will know what one is.) So little ol' non-Ivy me had to teach them. So much for that Ivy education.

Whatever.
