I have driven I-40 east to Albuquerque, I-25 south to Las Cruces, then I-10 to Houston in early April. Good drive, IMO.

Several routes you can choose.

I-10 to Las Cruces then
I-25 to Albuquerque then
I-40 to Flagstaff area or where ever the exit to the Grand Canyon is.

or

I-45 to Dallas then
I-35 to OKC then
I-40 to Flagstaff area etc.

or

I-10 to Phoenix then
I-17 to Flagstaff

I think the I-10 drives are more scenic but the I-40 from OKC to Flagstaff may have less traffic. I-40 is not all that great until you get close to Albuquerque. Then it becomes a nice drive the rest of the way.

I've done both several times. The 40/25/10 route is preferable - faster speeds and more scenic - but also has fewer stopping points.
