We are moving to Houston area in the spring and love to camp. Where are some areas to camp around Houston within an hour?

galveston State Park? Not sure what it's called officially.

Huntsville State Park, Stephen F. Austin State Park and there are others with a pretty easy drive. And if you really like camping you can visit Austin and camp instead of getting a hotel - McKinney Falls State Park is inside the city limits and is quite interesting.

The two places (Brazos Bend or up in Huntsville) are really your only options. Brazos Bend has gotten so crowded, that you have to book way in advance too. Not a lot of outdoor opportunities in Houston unless you like water sports.

There are four national forests just north of Houston - Sam Houston, Angelina, Davy Crockett and Sabine. Each has at least two campgrounds. The Corps of Engineers has a few campgrounds on Sam Rayburn. There's also Sea Rim on the coast and Village Creek State Park in the Big Thicket. A little further is Martin Dies Jr State Park, COE campgrounds on BA Steinhagen, Palmetto State Park and Lake Sommerville.

Lake Texana State Park is a few hours southwest of Houston.

Brazos Bend is nice but I would be scared of Alligators at night. Esp in a tent. I know Alligators rarely attack people but still I would go when it gets cooler and they start hibernating.

That's funny! I'm more scared of the wild boars that root around at night.

No personal experience, but I've heard great things about Lake Livingstons state park campgrounds and the KOA campgrounds there. Also Jellystone Park in Waller is great if you have kids.

Gators are not going to come around the campgrounds at Brazos Bend. That's a pretty uninformed reason to not camp there. It's beautiful.
