I see what you're saying. However, Houston is pretty prominent in O&G, but yet, so many people from other schools outside of Houston come here for those jobs.

There is only one real "research" University in Austin, and I doubt there is one real "top" research University in DFW, yet they have fairly well established "Tech" sectors in their economy. At least as far as Texas goes Houston has a solid foundation with Rice and The U of H in town, and don't forget about A&M as well.

But Univ of Texas Austin has a substantially higher research expenditure than the universities in Houston particularly in science and engineering.

I don't know much about DFW. I do hear it's not as good as Bay area which has Berkeley and Stanford.

According to Forbes Magazine Rice is the top research University in Texas ranked at #32 nationally. University of Texas ranked #76 , SMU #101 and A&M 137 the list goes on but that is enough to establish that the Houston area more than pulls its weight when it comes to "Top" research Universities in Texas.

I would go with usnews.com that provides specific rankings for engineering and science for graduate schools. It is what both students and scientists use to assess top programs. In computer engineering, for instance, Austin ranks #9 in the country.

I agree Rice university is a pretty good school but in engineering and science, Austin ranks way better.

Even if we accept your list as more authoritative ( I'm not saying I do), it still doesn't prove your point. Your list cuts off at #9 and I'm not going to pay $30 to see the rest of the list, but your list doesn't explain the well developed "Tech" sector in DFW. Also there are loads of UT alumni in the Houston area so Houston obviously can avail itself of some of that UT talent as well.....

Your negativity concerning the Houston area's "Tech" potential seems baseless..

What supports the O&G companies around Houston?? Houston has the most number of LCA s filed for after New York .

At least for Information Technology, its way ahead than the rest.

I disagree. The entire list of top schools in the country is available on the web site for free. The list cuts off at nine? But Rice was NOT on the list. And univ of texas Austin ranks consistently better than Rice in science and technology. You can check the list of top schools in all engineering disciplines and computer science. Rice does not even come close to Austin. May be in your imaginary world it does?

DFW? I think it ranks poorly compared to San Francisco.

If you had a free link why didn't you post it instead of a partial list to a pay site ?

If you think UT was a great computer science school before Tech companies started moving to Austin you have it backwards. The Tech companies moved to Austin first then UT developed its computer science curriculum. This correlation you insist must be in place before any kind of Tech industry can take root is a figment of your own imagination.

Doesn't matter. Top Students apply to Austin because of its strong research program which in turn generates alumni for industry. Also, UT Austin is better than Rice. That's my point. You are trying to change the attention by refocusing on correlation. Funny. I am not imagining anything. You are. the correlation is very much necessary. It's one of the reasons Houston is not ranked highly in the science and technology industry. It's sad but true.

Here is the free link

Also, there is lot of theoretical research in computer science particularly in algorithms and optimization. So that counts. Also, you need to look into the research grant success rate as well. UT Austin has a way better record there.
