Just need understand the admission system for PK and K.
Kids who born just after 1st sept. do not become eligible for Pk/K admission just because they r little late , do they have to wait for whole year. In that case their whole year will be wasted. Is it true?
Or is there any way toget admission without wasting a year.
You can keep them at home or put them in a lower level. My baby is Sep 3rd, so she has to do PS+,PK3, PK4 before finally reaching kindergarden.( mean while I can save enough for the private schools )

Several of my friends have 2 DOB's , one for school and one for real ( and I think you should know it too where)

Are we in some third world country with 2 DOB?

You do know they want a copy of the actual birth certificate...unless it is photoshop then that is another issue....

Its not wasted. I'm September and was always one of the older ones and more mature in my classes growing up. My kids are December and still are one of the older ones. They do very well. On the flip side I have a niece who met the cut off but was the youngest one. Very smart but not mature enough so they held her back in kindergarden an extra year. I see that quite a bit with the younger ones. My sister was the same way at that age. She excelled in school after that. I would rather my kids to be the older ones rather than the younger ones in their peer group.

^^ No kidding. Cheating. What a wonderful life lesson to teach your child. Are the kids in on it too? Most kids I know are well aware of their age by about 4, and miss no opportunity to tell people when their birthday is.

I think many of you are missing the point. It is not all about your child's intellectual ability. It is more about their maturity. I have been told by numerous educators that you can always sublimate your child's education if they are indeed ahead of their class. However not much you can do to make them mature quicker. Most private schools in the Houston area have a cut off of June 1 or July 1 for this very reason.

I really don't understand what you mean by wasting a yr? as if your child has an appt somewhere? he is just a kid, let him go to school when he can, why are you trying to push this?

I was born in Oct and I ended up getting admitted a yr later than my parents expected, you know what that did for me, I was almost a whole yr older than other kids, I was mature, I had better comprehension of lessons,... don't worry about him starting a yr later than you thought he'd start. If he starts this yr then he'd be one of the youngest.

If the child is ready socially and intellectually, does ok with kids almost a year older than him/her , then there is nothing wrong in letting him go ahead. The whole idea of ' oh let me give my child an edge by making him an older child ' is something i cannot understand. Now 80% of the parents think so , so the average age in a Kindergarten class is 6 Y.O instead of 5 Y.O . Kids are like sponge and ready to soak in what is presented to them. Granted some have social issues and parents are the best judge. What is the difference between Aug 30th born and Sep 15th born if both are ready to learn ?

Yes, children are ready to soak in learning, but they need a hands on approach not a worksheet approach.

The difference is, in Texas, the Aug child can start Kindergarten but the Sept child cannot. No matter what the "cutoff" age is, you'll still have kids born before the date and kids born after. You'll see parents waiting an extra year for their child to start kindergarten, you'll also see parents rushing to put their kids into kindergarten because it's free daycare.

Just because the government tells you your child can start school, doesn't mean they should. Kindergarten is not required.

State cut off is August 31. But definitely don't think of it as a wasted year. What most teachers won't tell you is, please please retain your child and allow them to be older rather than the youngest in the class. This is true from K through high school. Teachers can see those youngest coming from a mile away and secretly joke about the "reasons" parents give, i.e., "she was just too smart to wait," "she really wanted to go to school," etc. Tell it to the kid in 7th grade who was going to be on the small side anyway and is now a year younger than everyone else, a little immature, trying to prove he isn't too immature, and getting picked on. I always figure if the kid was really so smart, why didn't they just give him the chance to go into GT classes and graduate valedictorian.
