We just relocated from California 3 weeks ago and our auto insurance with Allstate has been around $760 every 6 months. Now, our auto insurance is set to expire in April and we were quoted $1200++ every 6 months. Nothing has changed (no tickets, suspensions or DUI's) except our zip code, but I can't imagine our rates going up almost 40% in Houston over California. Is this normal or should we continue to shop around?

I am so confused.

Thanks for any information.

Houston is an expensive city to get insurance in, we just shopped around and almost everyone, including my own Granddad who used to sell Allstate, told me the same thing.

Try going with an independent one, we use Spartan Insurance, but they quote/provide through Progressive.

Thanks for the heads up kaelti. I guess living in low cost of living state has its downsides as well. :-(

Is it really? Could that potentially be the reason for the higher insurance cost? Wow....

Houston has more expensive insurance because our crime rate is higher than CA

All poor people are flocking to Houston from NY DC LA SF. Rich people in these expensive cities do not bother moving out.

There is a strong correlation between poverty level and crime rate.

Just get several quotes from companies like Progressive, StateFarm etc.
Insurance companies rise their rates sometimes to get some extra profit from the loyal or conservative people.

Average Cost of Car Insurance is actually cheaper in TX over CA. Not sure about Houston.

Sounds like you're getting ripped. I have Liberty Mutual, full coverage on both cars and pay 1200 for the entire year.

Also they may be quoting you for coverage you do not need as well. Look at all the limits and ryders on this and future quotes. See how much fat you can trim.....

Yeah, 1200 for 6 months is absurd. Is this just for 1 car? You or someone living in your house must have some violations or something that you're not aware, because those are NY rates for bad drivers.
