Does anyone here have a kid enrolled at the Katy ISD Sp Ed? We're gonna have an IEP meeting with the ARD team and I'm wondering if a child can get 2 programs. My son has autism (educational diagnosis) and is nonverbal. He qualifies for the Early Childhood Autism Program, but I wanna know before the IEP/ARD meeting if he can qualify for their Intensive Language Development Program too or even their Speech and Language Services (the Speech is listed as a program and not as a related service like the occupational therapy and physical therapy, unless I'm misunderstand something). At the evaluation, when they showed me the list of programs, I was told that a child who qualifies for their Sp Ed can only enroll in one program, and on the evaluation result they recommend the ECAP. Does this mean, he can only have ECAP and can't be in Speech too even though he's non-verbal and has significant delay in language? Help please. Thank you!

Hi, did you receive any feed back, alternatively can you please share your experience with the Katy ISD ? We are in quite the same situation with our autistic son who will turn 3 this summer.

Thanks.

I don't know how it works in Katy ISD, but typically, an Early Childhood program like that includes speech and language development as well as other therapies. The programs that are listed separately are for kids who don't qualify for the intensive all around program but still need some help, and it's usually for an hour or two per week vs several hours a day.

If a child is diagnosed with Autism, it does not necessarily mean that they have Speech and language issues, and speech may not be part of the automatic "package" or services that an autism diagnosis opens up. Many kids who dont have an autism diagnosis receive speech therapy. The district could be trying to split hairs

Is it possible that they were discussing the difference between providing speech services under a 504 plan an IEP?

That's the only way this would make sense to me.
