Hi,
I am from Connecticut and will be travelling to Galveston for an interview at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
I know that the nearest airport is Houston Hobby.
Can anyone guide me what are the options of travelling from Airport to Galveston and travelling in the city?
Also, what are the options for reasonably priced hotels near U of T Medical Branch?
Also, How is the Galveston city in terms of living, costs, people, etc

If you are single without kids living near the Medical branch in Galveston would probably be your best option.

As far as getting around for a few days I would think a car rental would be your best option.

Agree with the previous posters. Fly into Hobby and rent a car. Live on the Island if you are single and don't have children. DJboutit's link appears to be one post, but has some good and accurate information.

Thanks for the basic info. The link seems good.. I read it twice, but I think I need to open the map and read it a few times to make sense of neighborhoods.
For now I am single coming for interview. If things happen for good, I will have my one year training here.. I will be single as my family , wife with 2 kids will stay in CT but may visit me once. It's too expensive to fly between CT and Galveston.
Any suggestion for a hotel or bed/breakfast/ dormitory/ hostel for 2 days of living for interview period?

So, you're only going to be there for a 1 year fellowship, I presume? Then, for sure live on the Island. As far as where to stay, if you want to go really cheap, why don't you call UTMB and see if they have any student housing or dorms for that timeframe? There are some nice hotels on the island, but for much more budget friendly, maybe someone else can make a suggestion.

BTW, when is this interview? Galveston Island gets pretty crowded the entire month of March for Spring Break, though I have no idea if/how that affects hotel prices and where. Something to keep in the back of your mind, though.

There are several budget friendly hotels but depends on date. If a cruise ship is departing the next day the rates may be higher. Plus Spring Break and other March activities on the island. Visit the Strand and Post Office St area on your time off.

Interview is on March 12. I plan to be there from March 11-13.
Would prefer budget accommodation? How about trying AirBNB...never tried before.

Just to warn you a lot of people that aren't from Galveston have a very negative view of the island including myself.

Prices will be a bit high on Galveston, but are more reasonable in the cities a few miles closer to Houston, like Texas City or La Marque. The price difference is like $100 a night or more vs Galveston. So that is probably your best option for something reasonably priced at a real hotel.

My daughter interviewed for the med school last year and she was able to stay with a current student for $25, otherwise we would have paid for her to stay at a hotel in La Marque or Texas City.

Good luck on your interview!
