I am utterly shocked at the ignorance people have on this site at Houston's trend of developments that have sparked the city. Since the previous threat went from a hotel announcement and turned into a lifestyle thread, I'll post news of upcoming developments as they are announced. I'll also post a few recent ones that have been announced recently.

This morning, the W Hotel got final government approval to its financing and tax breaks. Developers are now expected to move forward since the financing is agreed. This includes $43 million in tax breaks, but no upfront city cost.

This will be the third hotel connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center, forming a strong trio with the Hilton Americas and Marriott Marquis. Also the fully luxury hotel of the 3. This is good news, because it offers luxury lodging within the Avenida Houston project. Houston First called it the "lat big piece of the puzzle" to turning Avenida Houston into what its plan is.

Another major hotel is also planned near the area, the "hipster hotel" known as hotel RL who's construction was planned for to start in summer 2020 in EaDo on St. Emmanuel, just a few blocks away.

I wonder if they will still move forward with this considering the major oil bust.

Depends on how much the hotel was counting on general corporate travel (heavily influenced by O&G) vs. overflow from conventions (less dependent on O&G, apart from specific meetings like CERAWeek and NAPE). Obviously the convention market is affected by COVID19 in the short term, but that wouldn't have much impact on deciding to proceed or not with the project.

They are. Companies generally prefer investing during a downturn because they can find cheaper ways to build the same thing.

The extremely hyped Japanese store Uniqlo is opening its first Texas location at the Galleria. The brand is EXTREMELY popular among people that are fans of "Japanese" (manga, anime, ramen, etc) culture. They have stores all throughout the East and West Coast and Illinois.

Hopefully the new hotels will be more lucrative and bring some serious money to Houston.
Latest rating didn't list any Houston hotel on the top 10 revenue generators in Texas for 2019.
In the Houston area, the top revenue producer last year was The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston, which recorded RevPAR of $217.13. It ranked 13th statewide for RevPAR in 2019.

W’s are nice. No cheap furniture, rooms well insulated, etc. Not a top of the line hotel, but definitely upscale.

Yes. If it opened today, it would be a top 10 hotel. Below the Post Oak, St. Regis (currently being renovated), Four Seasons, Granduca, and Houstonian. May have missed a few but it would be right behind those.
