Go Coogs! (even if he didn't graduate).

Speaking of co-working and San Francisco, I haven't seen a co-working space since I visited S.F. a couple years ago when I saw Bespoke co-working on the 4th floor of the Westfield mall on Market Street. That's a convenient location in the middle of Downtown San Francisco. But it's definitely geared towards the tech scene!

There are plenty of hourly rent-an-office places around town though, mostly in the suburbs in less prime buildings.

It's always funny because Houston always has the higher median income and the lower COL than the other two cities. But why question it, the worker benefits from a higher salary and the cheaper costs. How does Houston pull this off?

Hopefully. But Tech is now considered an adjunct to industry since technology is integrated into everything these days. The so-called high tech hubs will lose their advantage because tech is now widespread into the mainstream economy. Houston may not be able to join the tech hub club on time, but tech will eventually become a core industry here.

A new sports stadium, for a new professional sports team, in a new league, is not only diversifying the Houston sports scene, but also the Greater Houston economy.

We’re incredibly excited,” Houston SaberCats coach Justin Fitzpatrick said. “It’s worth its weight in gold. This is going to be a real game changer for us.”

Major League Rugby began in 2018, partly inspired by an American rugby tradition that dates to the 19th century.

Despite their last-place finish in the league last year, the SaberCats are well ahead of the rest of MLR in their acquisition of a stadium, for which ownership paid $12 million — leaving the city of Houston to cover the $3.2 million cost of the 1,100-space parking lot surrounding the front half of the venue.

Opened in 2007, Infinity Park in Glendale, Colo., was the first rugby-specific stadium built in America and is considered the hub for top national and some international competitions. AVEVA Stadium, which will seat 3,200 with an overall capacity of 4,000, will be the second — and the first that meets World Rugby-sanctioned standards (because Infinity Park’s field lacks adequate runoff).

That excites SaberCats ownership

Houston’s investment in AVEVA Stadium isn’t just for the next generation. It fits the city’s goals of bolstering its present event offerings. “A real critical part of our success here is that we need to use it year-round. We can’t make a viable go of it if we’re just playing 12 games here,” Colona said. “It’s part of the city’s vision and why they were willing to do this as a private-public partnership. They think the city is missing out on some of these smaller and mid-size events because we don’t have the facilities. The smallest stadium we have in town is BBVA (Compass Stadium), where the Dynamo play. Well, we couldn’t even afford to turn the lights on over there.

The venue still won’t be fully functional Saturday when it opens for the SaberCats’ 5 p.m. match against the Seattle Seawolves, but Colona expects fans to enjoy a fuller experience by May. At that point, his job will have shifted from stadium project management to figuring out how to fill the stands and find groups interested in renting the space for concerts or other events.
“This is a long-term project. We’re showing a level of commitment to the rugby fans in this town,” he said. “It’s the old ‘Field of Dreams’ line: If you build it, they will come.”
https://www.houstonchronicle.com/spo...photo-17210901

AVEVA Stadium's address is 2055 Mowery Road / Houston, TX 77045, but for those using a mapping app on their phone, it’s best to search for Houston Sports Park, as both Google Maps or Apple Maps will direct you to a location on Mowery, but that location is about a mile west of the actual stadium.

Today we have two manifestations of Houston's growing economic diversity !

First two Tech giants team up to develop a business accelerator coming to Rice universities Midtown Tech center the Ion.

Then we will read that American Airlines is building a maintenance station at IAH.

Microsoft and Intel are collaborating on a Houston program aimed at helping companies developing sensors, robotics and other technologies that focus on big-city problems such as transportation and disaster response.

The Ion Smart Cities Accelerator, a partnership of the two tech giants along with startup hub Station Houston and the collaborative manufacturing workspace TXRX Labs, will start its programming on Aug. 1. It will provide six months of structured curriculum and six months of pilot programs to companies developing "internet of things" technologies that can be used in cities.
https://www.chron.com/techburger/art...r-13771683.php

American Airlines plans to open a new line maintenance station in Houston to provide additional support for the carrier’s high-traffic summer travel season. The carrier says its new $42 million station at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)—which will be the American’s 29th—should improve operational reliability and increase the number of available aircraft.
According to Kevin Brickner, senior vice president of technical operations at American Airlines, the airport sees an average of 38 American Airlines daily departures, which provides additional opportunities for the carrier to perform maintenance on its aircraft. The new line station will service the carrier’s Boeing 737 and Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft.

According to American Airlines, the new station will be staffed by approximately 46 aircraft maintenance technicians (AMT) and support personnel, which the carrier will begin recruiting in May during the line station’s first phase. During this time, the airline says it will secure a temporary space at IAH before adding additional maintenance work, such as service checks and engine washes.

The Port of Galveston is doing its own thing in helping to diversify the Greater Houston economy.

Wind energy brought significant cargo growth for the Port of Galveston during the first three months of 2019, the port announced Monday.Cargo related to wind energy increased to 21,355 tons in the first quarter, up from 928 tons for the same period last year.

"Cargo business is alive and well in Galveston," Port Director and CEO Rodger Rees said in a news release. "We anticipate a substantial increase, especially in wind energy, due to two project agreements in effect until the end of 2019."

Year-over-year for the month of March, the port also saw tonnage increase 2 percent for bananas and fruit, 8 percent for bulk grains and 27 percent for roll-on/roll-off cargo.

And Galveston is expecting 297 cruise ship calls for all of 2019, which is 27 more than last year.

A economic impact study shows the enormous economic importance of the Port of Houston in not only sheer numbers but in economic diversity as well.

The Port of Houston accounted for 10 percent of all jobs supported by U.S. ports in 2018, according to an economic impact study released this week.

The report, prepared by Martin Associates on behalf of the Port of Houston Authority, found that 1.4 million jobs in Texas last year were related to cargo moving through the port's public and private docks. Of that:
  • 67,039 were direct jobs, generated by cargo and vessel activity at the port. About 77 percent of these were held by Harris County residents;
  • 102,882 were induced jobs, those at grocery stores, healthcare providers and the like when direct employees buy goods and services;
  • 55,103 were indirect jobs, which include companies dependent on the port's activity for providing insurance products or maintenance and repair services; and
  • 1.1 million related jobs, largely tied to importing and exporting firms.
Taken together, direct, induced, indirect and related jobs related to the Port of Houston employed 3.2 million people in 2018.

The Houston Ship Channel generated nearly $802 billion in U.S. economic value last year. In Texas, it generated $339 billion -- 20.6 percent of the state's $1.6 trillion GDP.https://www.houstonchronicle.com/bus...photo-16513922
