Wether the complex is to be called Avenida Plaza, Avenida Houston, or whatever the name is by the time they open it, its scheduled to open soon.

There is Time Square Look alikes that have opened. Historically Piccadilly Circus in London and Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, of course. And more recently LA Live in Los Angeles. And there have been others announced in Miami and Atlanta, but have never broken ground. And Chicago's Riverwalk's remodeling to have the same effect. But Avenida is to happen now.

It seems Avenida will use projections instead of video screens from the renderings. And this is what they're trying to label as the "most central part of Houston". On one side of Avenida, the George R Brown Convention Center exists, where the projections will show on. And the other side will have Discovery Green which is expected to have a more thrilling feel as part of the project. Discovery is also supposed to be the "hub" of the Super Bowl, so I guess they will add installations there. The Marriott Marquis (to open this month) and the Hilton Americas (already open) are both right there, and each will have plenty of street-level amenities open to the public. The new restaurant row will open featuring a long list of restaurants including Biggio's Sports Bar. The biggest Starbucks in Texas is here and already opened, but expected to be better once everything opens. The Texas shaped lazy river sits at rooftop on the Marriott Marquis, letting you see the action while you swim. The Toyota Center is also right there. On the other end, the Partnership Tower and Minute Maid Park are there (but it isn't sure if the project extends that far in that direction). The "Grand Lobby" will be at 10th story of the GRB, but I'm not to sure what that is exactly supposed to be.

Out of the 8 lanes that currently are used for "Avenida de las Americas", 6 will be closed, and only 2 will be open for traffic. And they will add art and sculptures throughout to make it look "cool".

That's most of what I know about the project, but here are some links

I just got back from NY for the first time and its obvious Houston wants the same for downtown....unfortunately, ain't gonna happen due to lack of transit, lack of housing for all classes and reliance on cars

All Downtown Houston needs is more residents, as well as more services, and then it will be more bustling.

The residential aspect is quickly growing though, particularly on the eastern side of downtown. The momentum is there.

Before you know it, you'll go down there and barely recognize the place.

That's right pendéjos. We are slowly taking back the land that is rightfully ours.

Let it grow into its own identity. Who gives a flip if it is like New York or Chicago. Let's hope the growth can flourish into something uniquely houston and not something only to be compared with other cities.
