Washington Ave if you don't want to get crushed by cab/uber costs.

Downtown is the place.

five on this list
https://www.thrillist.com/drink/hous...ars-in-houston

and another list:
http://houston.eater.com/maps/essent...-cocktail-bars

neither of those include Warren's and La Carafe - both downtown institutions.

The answer to your question is partly age- and culture-dependent.

If you're, say, 27 or younger, and still fratty/greeky, Midtown. Maybe still some Washington Avenue places.

If you're mid-20s to 30 and slightly more laid back, Washington Avenue.

If you're mid-20s to 40 and even more laid back, White Oak.

If you're 20s to ??? and alternative, Montrose.

If you're hip-hop / soul, Midtown / 3rd Ward.

If you're hip-hop / trashy / strip-clubby, Richmond Avenue.

If you're late 20s to middle age and fun but not crazy, Downtown.

If you're late 20s to middle age and glam / rich scenester, Uptown / River Oaks District.

Default Take advantage of Uber

So what if the ride is 5, 10, 20 40 dollars... it sure as hell beats $10,000 dollars, time in jail, and a DUI on your record! 'Not saying you are not responsible, don't take offense, this is just unsolicited advice. Enjoy Houston!

When I visited, we went to Lola's Depot in Montrose and thought it was a great dive bar experience. The following night we went to La Carafe and Warren's which were both fun as well.

Huh? I don't understad why people post on this forum without knowing what they are talking about.

I would put downtown, Midtown, and Montrose above Washington Ave.

You only have about 6 bar options on White Oak. The Rice Village can be a nice change of pace at times, but not many options there either.
