I wouldn't buy a house within a few streets of a house with a bunch of junkers on the property.

The house behind me (in a very pricey neighborhood) has been abandoned, and is in terrible shape with junk all over the place. We have no HOA, and in Austin it's difficult to get anything done unless you have an HOA. So the properties near this abandoned house are worth essentially nothing since no one will buy them. But the owners of those nearby properties still have to pay property taxes as if their houses have a market value of $700,000.

I wonder if an appraiser comes to a property, finds bunch of junk cars in the neighbor's lot and it has an impact on the property's appraisal value?

I wonder if you can use the fact in your tax dispute.

Sounds like a good reason to have a strict HOA

Weatherguy,

Any chance you would PM me some info on where these homes in Austin that no one will buy are? For a friend...

We do have a deed violation for this but the Board decided not to enforce it. It has become a crime ridden area and the Board is supposed to keep property values up, or so I thought?

Who would?

What would you do if you had a nice house that you loved and the junkers moved in next door?

Op, what municipality are you in? Most have a 'junked car' or nuisance ordinance to cover this;
There is plenty you can do;
File an ordinance violation complaint; tip - file a complaint for EACH vehicle separately, that meets your municipalities codes.
INCLUDE color photos as well, even if not requested, and PICS of expired plates/inspection of ones on public street.
Likely will cover ANY JUNKER IN VIEW, on street or not. They will be GONE in 60 days ....

if in Houston proper:
Junk cars violate city ordinance - Houston Chronicle

I have the reverse to that situation. For the past 5 years I politely tried convincing my neighbor to keep his cars in the drive way or in the garage but without any success. He got a 3 car garage and also could easily park 4 cars in the drive way but nooo, he had to keep them on the street at all time. The drive on the street was so unsafe and inconvenient but he also ruined the entire cool de sac for our kids wanting to play there.

He is now selling his house and all his cars disappeared. That being said my next door neighbor and I felt compelled to park all our 6 cars all over the street and give him a taste of his own medicine. He already complained to HOA but I am not breaking any HOA rules or law. He is furious and I am loving it. I do hope he looses a big chunk of money and he learns how to be a good neighbor in his life journey. What goes around comes around they say, right?
