I am moving to Houston from Michigan and will be working in the Galleria area (Westheimer and Fountain View). I am in the process of looking for an apartment, and as a young female, am primarily concerned with safety. I have been told that the area South of Westheimer can be somewhat dangerous... is this true? I'm talking about the area maybe 5 miles South of Westheimer, so not far. Any advice you can offer would be really helpful. Thanks!

There's probably nothing that far south of Westheimer worth recommending. That'd put you right in the middle of the Gulfton or Fondren apartment ghetto. There's nothing you'll find where nothing bad can happen to you. You've just got to stay vigilant and aware and try not to make yourself a target. This isn't Mayberry.

Does your budget prompt you to live there? Live North of Westhiemer if you can. Single females need to live as close to Woodway as they can afford. Period.

The areas I'm looking at are zip codes 77042 or 77063 and streets like Jeanetta or Westpark. Jeanetta especially is probably less than a mile south of Westheimer so thats why I wasn't sure if even that area is less safe.

Yes, it is based on budget, but if these are more dangerous areas I'd rather live a little farther from work to feel safer.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the advice!

Houston Crime Map - Westside Patrol Division - 20G30 Beat

Some crime stats for January in the Westchase area west of Beltway 8.

Looks like around Westpark/Wilcrest/Richmond there are some apartments with not a whole lot going on....most of the blips are along Westheimer. You're going to have a few burglaries and auto thefts and a robbery here and there in any apartments you're going to apparently afford. They happen in more expensive ones too. They can happen anywhere.

Of course keep in mind this was only for January...

Hello Fellow Michigander!! ~~~~~ waving ~~~~~

Look in 77056. I'm street-smart, etc. and don't even like shopping at that end of end Westheimer. The Walmart at Dunvale & Westheimer makes me feel like I'm in an underworld. Can you believe that someone approached me in the store asking if I wanted to buy boot-leg movies?!?! That was the last time I shopped there....

Tangent, sorry. Yeah, 77056 is your best bet. Also, look at other zips further inside the loop.

Welcome, you'll love Houston.

Thanks everyone! I will look further inside the loop, and also north of Westheimer. The maximum budget that I was looking at was $650, but I just decided to raise it to $700-725. So still not too high, but hopefully I can find something a little nicer. Any recommendations on apartment complexes in that price range would be greatly appreciated!

Good glad you changed your mind. You don't want to live in the Jeanetta/Westpark area.
