We have been watching everything happening to our soon to be hometown and it breaks our hearts.

My new job at the Galleria starts September 18th and we were supposed to fly in this week to look at houses. Obviously we couldn't and we rebooked our flights and hotel for next week (flying in late Tuesday and out Saturday morning).

Now given the scope of the devastation we are thinking that maybe we need to push things back by another week to the the week of the 11th. Obviously that's not ideal considering I need to report to work the very following week!

But we don't want to be insensitive to everyone recovering from this tragedy by bothering them during this trying time. And if all the roads are not passable we won't be able to see the homes we are interested in.

Thank you and I hope you are all doing ok there!

You need to push this back at least a month. I can't imagine anyone going back to "business as usual" by next week.

The roads should be 99% clear by next week. Life still needs to go on.

This is NOT a good time for house hunting. I would say - try to find an extended stay hotel, or ask your work to help you find corporate apartment/condo and wait with buying till things normalize.
Why buying in a hurry??

I find that interesting too that people literally start new jobs and within a month they are "buying" homes with no knowledge of the city. Good luck to you though. It's going to be crazy over the new few months as it relates to housing.

I agree, it's crazy to buy a house just within first month without knowledge of the city. But I have seen that in several movies

However, if you are ready to buy right now, do it now and don't delay, that's my opinion. Because only right now you can see the truth if the house was flooded or not. In next couple of months everything will be staged and probably cheaply fixed, so you won't be able to find out the truth. And also prices might go up since it will be a shortage of houses that didn't flood.

Yea I agree, a week delayed is enough time as long as all the realtors/places you looked at are still on board. This storm should be a very good litmus test for your future neighborhood.

I agree, It will be easy to tell if a house has flooded or not so the next few months may be the ideal time to house hunt in Houston.

Lots of people don't own a (paid off) house. They buy it like a car, always paying payments, always new location, selling as soon they move to another place. When you read the threads on House Forum, most people buy a house with the mind to sell it soon. They worry about stuff the potential buyers would like, not what they like... Not many put their heart into it. All is temporary. That's how it works here. Especially in a city.

Most offices are closed on Wednesday (Aug 30th). Does anyone have any predictions on how long it will take for the water flooding the highways to recede? Assuming that tomorrow will be sunny, any chances of people getting back to work on Thursday? I personally don't know if I want to drive on I-45 and 610 on Thursday itself.
