Asking here because even middle school parents cannot seem to give a straight answer. My kid is currently in HISD neighborhood elementary school, so this is the first time we are applying outside the neighborhood zoned school. We are looking at middle schools - the zoned school as well as others that are nearby. After visiting the different schools, I'm told that Pin Oak has two different ways to apply, is that right? My kid is in the GT program, so I'm not sure if that is a different consideration. I will appreciate if someone can provide the steps. It's so confusing to me that I'm afraid I'm going to mess up.

Super confusing, yes. There are two paths. They should have explained it to you when you visited.

You can apply for the boundary program if your zoned middle school is Long, Pershing, or Johnston. That comprises A and B House. ( Pin Oak has three houses)

A House includes English Language Learners, on level students, some below level learners, and above level students. It also has gifted learners.

B house includes special education students, below/on/above level students, and gifted students.

Another option to apply is the language magnet, which is C house. It includes all students of all types. They are required to take language courses for part of their electives.

It's a great campus and kids get a really wonderful education.

Other middle school campuses I love are Lanier, TH Rogers, Grady(Is it Tanglewood MS now? ). Briarmeadow Charter is another good option.
Other middle school campuses that are pretty good are Pershing and Meyerland MS.
