I don't think there is a set number. I'm guessing at most 1-2 students and often no students. Schools tend to pull kids off the waitlist that fit the profile of the student that is leaving.

It is not complicated folks.... Here are the ways to get into these fancy private schools:

1. Be friends with some folks who are in the clique and can get you accepted to the club
2. Clearly be ready, willing and able to contribute SIGNIFICANT cash to the "annual giving fund"
3. Have a stellar athlete who the coach will demand be accepted

Once they have filled up the ranks with legacies and the folks who meet one (or more) of the criteria above, then they start looking at the pool of "really smart, but what's in it for the school" kids and their families. At that point it's a crapshoot. Clearly you have to have great grades, great teacher recommendations, ideally live in the right neighborhood, etc.

They aren't worried about diversity. Item #3 above covers that need quite nicely.

I sent two kids through this crap, and then the 3rd went to public schools. Save your money. If you have to make a choice, move to a neighborhood with better public schools and invest your money that way. Way better ROI!

Hard to argue. There are intangibles, but you can rarely justify via an analytic/ROI approach where there is a good public school option.

While your child's IQ score is impressive, it likely won't play a role in whether she moves out of the Wait Pool. In most years, I would say that there usually isn't much movement. This year, however, I wouldn't be surprised if there was potential for an opening. Earlier this year one of their board members shared that they would primarily focus on accepting students of alumni, but based upon a few families I know that are not in the Kinkaid community, they seemed to be reaching well outside of that goal as well. It sounds like a number of schools have already had to dip into their Wait Pools, and if the employment situation continues, I wouldn't be surprised if more current families had to explore options. -I'm sure that Kinkaid would try to dip into its endowment to help families in these times, but it really depends on how long this goes. All the best.

My son scored 9,9,8,7. All A’s. Plays tournament baseball, tackle football at a high level. Won character without question for his school. Applied to St John’s for 6th grade. Had what we thought an amazing interview (over an hour long, where other applicants finished their interview within 15-20 mins).
Did not get in. Legacy is ultimately the reason he did not get in.
True, very limited open spots for middle school. But, nonetheless I couldn’t imagine someone having that much more of a superior academic, athletic and extracurricular background as my son.
We will not reapply for upper school.
