How's living in Sugarland? I'm born and raised in Las Vegas for 49 years, and have never lived anywhere else. But, I'm looking for a new change and scenery. A place for a straight, working, middle, class African-American family with a 7 year old boy who are drama free. We need a good school system for him and a place that has jobs. Are there natural disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes there? How's the job market? Is there racism and/or diversity there? Crimes? Let me know.. or is there a better place to move to in Texas? I don't like the Houston freeways... No way!!

Sugar land is a suburb of Houston and Houston is only about 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico which is prone to hurricanes. Also Texas is very car centric. If you don’t like to drive freeways, you will have a hard time going to many places.

Sugar Land is super diverse and super safe. Racism would be far less of a problem there than most places. It has excellent schools too.

I suppose you could take side streets everywhere but that would take longer. Youd be better off getting used to the freeways.

As for natural disasters, we do get hurricanes every 10 years or so. Sugar Land hasnt been horribly affected by one to my knowledge. Tornadoes are pretty rare here.

If you don't like Houston Freeways than Texas might not be right for you. I would suggest Dallas because traffic is not as bad but it's freeway system is pretty identical so I don't know what to tell you.

I hate to tell you but if you hate freeways and bad traffic, Atlanta is actually worse.

The biggest change about Houston coming from Vegas is the shift away from the tourist-centric focus. Gambling is still illegal in Texas (and Louisiana casinos run ads here in Houston, and surprisingly far-flung San Antonio). Houston caters to everyday life of working in Corporate America and living in the family-friendly middle-class suburbs (no billboards advertising vices or rehab in this town).

Houston is the complete opposite of Las Vegas when it comes to scenery! Houston is green with trees and on the humid Gulf Coast, unlike brown inland desert Las Vegas with Lake Mead (and Hoover Dam). The good news is that Texas is not all desert like the old-time Western movies, but being on the Gulf Coast means hurricanes in the summer. Tornadoes are more frequent and stronger further inland you go in Texas.

Speaking of freeways, Houston is more like L.A. with its extensive system of wide and modern freeways. The state government has concentrated on Houston for freeway widening. The arterial roads are not as wide or fast as you would find in Vegas. The typical construction is 4-lane with median (2 lanes on each side).

Houston is geographically bigger than Vegas--20 miles means an adjacent neighborhood in Houston, compared to a cross-town journey in Vegas--so get used to putting more miles on your car. Sugar Land is only 20 miles from DT Houston according to the distance marker at the major intersection of SH 6 and I-69.

But this is the most ethnically diverse city in Texas hands down. Being the center of the global Energy Industry has brought together people from around the world to the middle of the U.S. You won't be out of place as an AA here. The Arab Muslim women wearing full-body burkas will definitely attract stares before black skin becomes an issue.
