Houston gas stations (besides Buc Ee’s) were scary ugly before Circle K and 7 Eleven got here.

I'm with you. I've used them in a few cities and they have never really struck me as anything special other than a clean gas station with a pretty good convenience store/mini-mart. They, Circle K, and Racetrack are all kind of interchangable to me. Certainly not on the level of Bucee's or somewhere like Sheetz or Wawa (both of whom I really wish would expand west at some point).

I wonder if Buc Ee’s will ever expand on their smaller stores like the one in Cypress, Pearland, etc in other metros. The only one I know of outside of the Houston area is that one just east of Austin.

There's an In-N-Out in Stafford 10 minutes from my house. A former coworker (from Cali) use to go on and on about it until I just HAD to try it.

Like someone said above, it's basically Whataburger with a duller twist. Nothing to brag about. And this is coming from a guy who's not a very picky eater in the first place.

Upscale is not how I'd describe any QT gas station. When I delivered pizzas in college the only reason why I liked QTs was because they typically had the lowest gas prices compared to other stations nearby. Someone mentioned earlier that QTs=Racetracs and that's 100% correct. They are essentially the same and I never considered Racetrac upscale. And just like QT, Racetrac has nicer new locations and some rundown older locations.

I thought the burger was fine, but the fries tasted like cardboard. No flavor at all. Maybe I came on a bad day or something - waited in line for two hours when they first opened in Katy and haven't felt the urge to visit since then.

I agree. I also realize food is certainly a very subjective topic so perhaps some folks do enjoy the fries...(nobody I know however... )
While I do not think In-N-Out is fantastic, I can easily eat the burgers.

The CA transplants made the biggest fuss over In and Out coming to Texas.

When we tried it we thought it as ok, but on the dull side and not NEARLY as fantastic as the hype surrounding the place.

It was not terrible...but I doubt we will make any effort to go back or make it a part of our dining out plans in the future.

I don't really like fries, but I do like burgers and from a burger perspective In and Out is better than Whataburger imo. Not as good as Shake Shack though.
