My husband and I are relocating to Houston within the next 6 weeks or so and I found this thread and have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out where to live so I am hoping for some help. I am somewhat familiar w/ Houston since we currently live near Beaumont.

My hubbie has a job downtown with an oil company. The refinery is located in Deer Park, so he may possibly have to work there as well so we would like someplace. We don't want to buy near Katy in case that happens. We are looking to spend ~200K for a home and want good schools. We are looking for a safe neighborhood, low crime rates and good schools. I want trees, parks, splash parks and public swimming pools and a reasonable communte for my husband. Basically, I want to have my cake and eat it too. lol.

Our children are currently not school aged (7 mo. and 2 1/2 -pray for me ), but we are looking for a neighborhood with that is family oriented that would be good for them to grow up in, play outside, etc, and also that has ammenties nearby like grocery stores, churches, restaurants, etc.

I have read a lot about Summerwood and Silverlake in Pearland, but have been scared off of Summerwood b/c of mention of the flooding issues and Silverlake b/c traffic is supposedly horrendous.

Any suggestions/ opinions? Thanks for the help.

Uhm...What about Deer Park? I swear this city has more programs for kids during the summer and after school than I can count. They even have parent/kid fishing classes periodically (for example). No splash park but do have public pool, gym, parks, library, etc. Also programs for adults like pilates, yoga, etc. at the community center. The churches all get together and put on non-denominational programs like the youth explosion coming up in August. The large neighborhood mentallity of this small city really surprised me when I moved here. Deer Park Schools are pretty good too.

I live near Summerwood and have never heard/seen any flooding issues. We looked at several Pearland communities, Summerwood and Fall Creek when we were deciding where to live in the Houston area. Hubby works downtown. Pearland didn't have enough trees for our taste. We really liked Summerwood but fell in love with a house in Fall Creek. There are new schools opening in the Summerwood and Fall Creek areas and we hope they will be good...but there is no data there to say "great schools" yet. ~fingers crossed~ IHTH!

If working downtown and near deer Park, look at Friendswood. The commute to Downtown is not bad. Clear Lake is another option.

Kingwood/Atascocita is a great family area full of professionals. 30 min commute downtown. Much better schools than Beaumont. Lived there before they built the prisons.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. We are definitely busy checking each of them out.

I haven't ever thought about Deer Park, we'll have to check it out too.

Thanks!

Most folks tend to forget us. Check out the city's website: City of Deer Park
pay special attention to the parks dept brochure link on the right of the screen for neighborhood activities.
City services are great here too and unlike Houston, we are zoned and codes are strictly enforced. I like the fact I do not have to be in an HOA to be protected. City Council is also very approachable if you get ticked about something.
