I'm moving to Houston and am considering attending 3 colleges. The University of St. Thomas, Texas Southern University, The University of Houston-Downtown, and Houston Baptist University. (Sorry that was four. )
Does anyone have any opinions on which school(s) is/are better academically? Has anyone had any experience with any of the above schools? (graduate, withdrew, transfered in/out, know a guy who knew a guy . . . ). Ghetto students, preppy students, spoiled kids, good kids, you get the drift. Any information, stories, or input would be appreciated. Good and bad. Thanks. BTW, my major would be Finance (specifically in the consulting/planning area) if that helps.

HBU - smaller private christian college - big mix of the students who go there. a lot of commuter students.

Texas Southern University- primiarly an african american university. not sure what they offer really. it rests in the middle of 3rd ward.

University of Houston - GREAT university with a HELL OF a business college. comes with the accredidation of A&M and UT but without the cost. easy to get in and out of but is centrally located down town.

Dont know much about the University of St. Thomas otehr than it is super uber pricey.

TSU is in major trouble. They've had some horrid leadership over the past few decades and its all coming to a head. Their most recent President was busted for fraud and they're facing a major budget shortfall as their campus is falling apart. The State is considering placing them in another University system in order to get their **** straight.

Avoid it like the plague.

UH is your best bet. St. Thomas is great as well, but its not cheap as it is a Private school (as is HBU).

Is the University of Houston Law School located on the Downtown campus?

Where is the UH regular school (undergrad) located?

Visitor2007: The law school is on the main campus on Calhoun. Both the main university and the downtown branch have undergrad schools.

Some clarification about the University of Houston System:

- There are two University of Houston universities located in close proximity: UH-Downtown at 100 Main, and UH Main Campus at 4800 Calhoun. Other UH colleges include UH-Clear Lake, UH-Victoria, UH at Cinco Ranch, UH at Sugarland, and UH Distance Learning.
- Both UHs in the downtown area are their own colleges. For instance, I attended UH-Main for 1.5 years, but transfered to UH-Downtown. My diploma is from UH-Downtown, not Main or the UH-System.
- UH-Main is the big one. This campus hosts KUHT/KUHF, the music school, Moores Opera House, dorms, and the engineering, hospitality (restaurant and hotel management, including their hotel), optometry, pharmacy, math, natural science, business, computer science, liberal arts, social science, social work, and education colleges - among other things.
- UH-Downtown is the smaller upstart. They're an open-enrollment school, so if there are some problems with your academic record that prevents UH-Main from paying attention to you, go to UHD. They're a more urban university, housing all of their colleges and classes in a much more compact campus. They've recently added a new business school building and a few other campus improvement projects. They're one of the terminals of the light rail line downtown, so it's easy to get to from any other part of downtown or the medical center. They host numerous colleges, but students need to head to the main campus for some things. UHD is most known for its business and criminal justice schools. Houston PD hires quite a few UHD grads - if you want to be in the blue, head to UHD. The business school is quite good, and rivals UH-Main in quite a few areas. UH-Main likes to pretend their business school is superior, but the UHD folk are nicer and more accommodating in my experience. I might be a bit biased, but I feel like I learned more at UHD than I did from my time at UH-Main.

So, you're saying that UH-Downtown is not part of the UH school system, but is UH-Dowtown a public school?

Well, no. All UH schools are part of the UH System. The confusion comes in when trying to treat all schools in the UH System as "The University of Houston." They aren't all the same entity - each UH has their own management, admissions criteria, financial aid departments, and faculty. There might be some intermingling, but the major schools in the UH System are all separate colleges.

Now, UHD and UH-Main are both state schools. They're just not the same school.
