The largest Kroger grocery store in Texas is opening later this year in Fort Bend County (http://www.fortbendnow.com/2009/05/19/37992 - broken link).

123,000 square feet, a large variety of grocery and deli products, gourmet and chef-prepared foods, large floral section, a wine shop, an organic section, and kitchen accessories. There will also be a large space where outdoor patio furniture and grills will be sold.

I guess they think that all the population growth in Fort Bend County can support a mega grocery store.

As for the Kroger Marketplace store, it will offer “the best of a Signature Store in a much larger format with expanded variety for one-stop shopping, said Kroger Director of Consumer Affairs Gary Huddleston.

But the stores also will offer goods not previously associated with a Kroger’s grocery store. These inlcude a large “kitchen place” with numerous kitchen items for sale, including dishes, pottery and placemats; a “bed and bath” area; an area offering small home furniture; an offering of home-office products; and a large amount of space devoted to selling outdoor patio furniture, grills and related items, Huddleston said in January.

I wondered what Kroger was going to do. It seems to me that they were kinda caught between a rock and a hard place here in Houston as of late...and now it looks like they are taking HEB Plus' model and running with it.

Should be interesting! Grocery wars in Houston. Love it!

We have a Kroger Signature just 2 minutes drive away so I tend to go there more often than our local HEB Market which is about 10 min away.

I find Kroger to be more expensive than HEB every time even with a Kroger card.

Is that pretty much the norm?

Topaz - where is Mason Road?

I will happily pay money to avoid HEB...such an unpleasant shopping experience HEB can be.

Here is a map of Grand Parkway and Mason Road in Richmond.

It's the same format as the new one on 6 at Sienna Plantation. They're fantastic.

I find the super big stores exasperating to shop. When you forget something you have to walk a mile back to get it.

My favorite stores are the small Rice Epicurians. But you can't get everything there.

That's my biggest pet peeve about the HEB Bunker Hill Market. It's maddening if I forget something.

Rice Epicurean is by far my favorite too. I just love them. Everything about them!

I liked Rice Epicurean and there was a major danger of the credit card going into meltdown at Central Market!
