The water was shut off today in my neighborhood (77006) without any notice. I just moved here from San Antonio and this is very disturbing to me. Does this kind of thing usually occur in Houston? How is one supposed to live a normal life when the water can be shut off at any moment?

Did you call your water district and ask what was happening?

Maybe a water main break? Have you called your utility provider? Have you checked with neighbors? Maybe (since you're new) they didn't properly start your service and shut you off just at your house.

I doubt this type of situation is unique to Houston...

The drought has caused many water mains to break and they typically have to turn off residential water for a time for repairs. Usually they will give notice. I would contact your HOA if you have one and make sure they alert the residents in the future.

Yeah, which part of 77006? There's always 311, but not sure how efficiently you'll get the information you're seeking.

Our water got turned off for a few hours on Saturday for repair of a water main break down the street. A worker from the water/utility department went door-to-door to let people know that it would be off from 1-4p. We were notified about 10:15a.

My water has never been turned off here, and other than the aforementioned temporary outages to repair broken mains, I'm not aware of anyone else whose water has been turned off, either.

Can't do much else if the main breaks. This drought is astonishing. San Antonio is at least relatively used to water shortages; Houston's never had one that I know of. I'm not sure it's ever been this hot and dry this long in Houston, at least not in my memory.

Ours is off, too, in 77035, since about 11 AM. No notification this time, but there is a big water main break down the street.

Yeah, this is a truly exceptional year. The drought has caused dryer air and higher temperatures than we'd normally get. As well as lots of cracked ground and whatever is buried in it. Sorry for the inconvenience but we are all having to deal with it in one way or another.

The main line that supplies League City and part of Friendswood got a crack in it about a month ago. They had to lower the flow rate and pressure till they got that fixed. I think it took a few days. I've been down here for almost 26 years and have never seen that happen before in the area.

This happened the other day out here in Katy, 77450. Our water was off for at least 12-13 hours.

Add to that the fact that stoplights either go out individually or as a whole blocks every couple of months, and this area proves to have some terrible infrastructure and/or upkeep by those looking after it.
