Houston fared fairly well in it's first year on America's Favorite cities list.

Travel + Leisure (http://www.travelandleisure.com/afc/2009/city/houston/ - broken link)

Had I known affordable hotels were part of the ranking, I would have easily agreed that it's quite an affordable city to visit. I spent a few days in decent affordable hotel just inside the Inner Loop when my bf and I split. So maybe it's wrong, but I guess I was kinda glad that Houston is not filled with tourist traps!

Houston ranked high in the attractive, diverse and stylish residents categories, as well in classical music, museums/galleries and theater. Big name restaurants and ethnic foods ranked high, as well as the shopping categories. All of the categories in the airport section ranked within the top 10!

Low points for the city were the romantic trip category, summer vacation, people watching and of course Houston's kryptonite, public transportation/pedestrian friendliness.

Overall good job Houston!

Wow, we actually did really good. I thought Houston would be underrated, but it performed better than a lot of other more well known cities that are in the same "tier".

Isn't romance what you make of the situation? 'Back of a truck, a car, or in the dirt? Any trip can be made romantic!

In the recent past, Travel + Leisure had ignored Houston and actually not had it as a choice. A bunch of people complained, so they put Houston back as a choice. Glad to see it did so well! Good marks in the people, culture, restaurant, and shopping categories by visitors!

I think Houston should be on the top of many lists. Some of the most friendliest people I have met.
