Hello everyone! We're moving from Mandeville, LA to Katy in May-June 2010, and I need help deciding on the best schools for our 3 daughters. They are in the 6th (twins) and 8th grades in the gifted program, and are doing very well. The oldest is part of the Duke TIP program and scored 26 on the ACT in 7th grade. They are also very active in dance and karate. I'm not sure what the best high schools/jr. high schools would be for the girls. We're trying to narrow down specific neighborhoods for house hunting and this is part of the decision making.

Any advice would be most appreciated !

There're a LOT of Tippers at Cornerstone Acedemy, a little to the east of Katy, in Spring Branch. It's a lottery school for that school district. I was part of TIP back when it just started. Great program. Has your child made in up there for the summer program yet?

Don't know about where they go in Katy though.

Not yet -- she went to the Summer Institute for the Gifted's program for 3 years. We would have sent all 3 girls to SIG but the recession has held us back from spending the $$.

If you're looking at Katy ISD specifically and want top academics, best to stay zoned to the high schools south of I-10, that would currently be Seven Lakes HS, Cinco Ranch HS, and Taylor HS in that order. All are excellent. Great Jr High schools would include Beckendorff, Cinco Ranch Jr high, Woodcreek Jr High and Beck Jr High. I don't know too much about the others. There is a new Jr High slated to be built on the same campus as Seven Lakes HS which will undoubtedly be exceptional based on how good the HS is.

I second sbhubbell's recommendations. In my opinion, Beckendorff has been (and continues to be) an excellent school with a terrific staff and a wonderful principal. I've heard great things about Beck, as well, but none of my kids have attended Beck. Seven Lakes HS is very strong on academics, as is Cinco Ranch HS. Either one would probably provide the necessary challenges your children need. Good luck with your house-hunting!
