I have a place out by Sam Rayburn and it is very quiet out there. Also much cheaper to buy land than Lake Conroe. However there are very few amenities here aside from the lake and it is a bit of a drive to civilization so it all depends on what your looking for.

For a decent lakefront home I'm expecting to pay over $750K, but I'm downsizing and really don't want over 3500 sqft. Here in Va Beach you can't really even smell the salt water for under $1M. I'm just looking forward to a slower pace. Thanks so much again for all the hospitable insight!

Hello, I just read your reply to a inquest about living near Lake Conroe. I am a native Texan who is widowed and retired living in Florida. I am thinking about moving back to the Houston area and I like Conroe area. I noticed that you stated that Texas is rated as the 5th most popular state for retirees. I wasn't aware of this. Thank you because I am in good health and wanting to enjoy my life back in Texas now that I am free to live where I want too.
Bye for now,
Nativetexasgal

When we moved to Lake Ray Hubbard there were 7500 people in the whole county. Not so anymore. Now it is 75000. Between the jets skis and the drunks yelling hey Mable, bring me another beer, you will need to fish at midnight.

How bad is the humidty? We are coming from the San Joaquin Valley in California where it's usually over 100 in the summer, but humidity is maybe 20%.

Currently at almost 1am, he temp around lake Conroe is 80 degrees and the humidity is 80%. The highs will get up to high 90's and in the middle of the day (hottest part of the day) the humidity levels stop to around 50-55%.

The most beautiful lake in Texas is Lake Travis in Austin. It is also the cleanest. The water level fluctuates, but it is worth the agro just to be there. The Pedernales River, where it flows into Lake Travis, is also very pretty. Do yourself a favor and check these out. Eat at the Oasis overlooking the lake, preferably at sunset.

Lake Austin is also wonderful AND constant level, but out of your stated price range, unfortunately.

I live within 20 minutes of Lake Conroe, and I would echo others who said to look up at Lake Palestine- it's way more spread out and natural- and if you want calming, I would try there more than Conroe.
