This is our first time taking the cars for these in the US - we moved from the UK 18 months ago. I was going to use Jiffy Lube as they are convenient - is this usually done while you wait and if so how long am I likely to be stuck there. Also if anyone has another recommendation for where to get this done please let me know. I am in Pearland. TIA.

shouldn't be long if they don't have another car in front of you..... i'd guess probably about 15-20 minutes.

I agree with the above poster...the inspection takes about 20 min on average. MANY places provide the service so generally you won't be waiting in a long line.

Be sure to take your current proof of insurance with you as they will ask to see it.

I find places that only do inspections are a little faster, like Mr. Sticker. But when I also need an oil change, I go to Jiffy Lube or Firestone Auto Center. The wait time all depends on who is in front of you. At Firestone, you can make an appointment and I often get coupons in the mail for them. But it usually takes 30-45 minutes. I can also just leave my car there and pick it up later if I don't want to wait. I don't think you can do that at Jiffy Lube.

I go to Mr. Sticker on 1960. My engine does not meet california emissions and it does not have an oxygen sensor after the converter and it has some stuff added onto it like a rising rate regulator, a 40 shot of N20, MSD, and adjustable camshaft gears. I just give them $30 under the table and it passes.

Make sure they change your blinker fluid.

To the original poster, I personally avoid Jiffy Lube, they seem to be more expensive. I like using Kwik Kar locations.

Damn, those guys are cheap. At that rate they must not value their jobs very highly, nor their freedom for that matter.

to OP - go anywhere - pretty much any place that has the inspection sign in front. The inspection in Texas is a joke, and unless you have major issues with the car or check engine light is on, you should pass.

If it's a new car with just under 2 years (1 year and 11 months) it's $12.50 or 13.50, can't remember. If you go over 2 year mark it's $40. So go early, and it's only a safety inspection.
