The COL in Seattle may be higher but living on a tight budget is better than not having a budget to live on at all.
Have heard the same. There are lots of fast food jobs right now---but those may go if drilling goes bust.

Tough, tough times.

BTW, I have "toured" many of these forums and the advice is the same from all parts of the country: if you've got a job lined up, good for you and come on. If you have a job now, and don't have one in the remote area, stay put. Companies will hire locals over relo's unless, as someone said, you have a skill in high demand. I'm afraid with the layoffs forecast, IT is going to get tough here as well. IT folks looking to "move" into the medical field will be looking from all the oil industry layoffs.

We are still all about oil. When it's rich, we flourish. When it's down, we cave.

It's tough here finding a job. Luckily I have a job that I was able to get out of college, something I was hoping to be temporary. A year late, still trying to start that career.

I would take the doom and gloom about the recent ban on offshore drilling not too seriously. There certainly could be some serious repercussions but more than likely it will resume once 6 months is over. I highly doubt there will be huge layoffs due to a 6 month ban as it doesn't make sense.

Well, we certainly haven't replaced it with any other energy options. We have to keep drilling - just more regulations, etc. - I would think more jobs out of that, not less.

One thing to consider is that these types of forums tend to be "doom and gloom" in general. It would probably be better to seek the advice of recruiters who know the fields and future outlooks in particular professions. The consistently good advice found here, though, is "never move without already having a job."

Hearing this a lot - especially from members of our church who are in the industry. A lot of projects have recently been canceled because of the ban.

Don't assume that there are not recruiters or those with expertise in a given field hanging out here...
