I am sure most of you already know...but putting it out there anyway for all the folks moving to the area. My wife emailed some folks in reference to some of the rentals advertised and upon receiving responses we were couldn't help but notice the emails were identical. The only difference was the company. And surprise surprise they asked for copies of our credit report. Just a warning, I think we will be trying to work more with a Realtor now. It is scary how prevalent this is getting. Both postings were from the same day also. We will be looking to report it also, but they are probably in Nigeria working 100+ accounts.

Craigslist has had HUGE problems with rentals around the country. You can look on ValleyMLS.com also.
I would also call a few property management companies.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be very cautious when using Craigslist, especially when looking for houses for rent or sale.

I was just contacted by a lady who found a listing we have for sale on Trulia , and wanted to verify that it was for rent...she had seen it advertised for rent on Craigslist. The "scammer" had acquired the owner's name (which BTW is NOT listing with the tax assessor so they either did a probate record search OR have access to our MLS). Thankfully for her, and for our clients, she acted diligently in trying to verify the validity of the listing.

Again, PLEASE be careful! There have been so many scams involving real estate and Craigslist...I would NOT use it at all when searching for homes and would be extremely cautious about using it for anything.

Its not rocket science...just simply ask to meet at the property to view it. If it is a scammer, you will either get no reply or some long drawn out story about how they are in the military and are overseas or something of that nature. Who on earth would send a deposit in without ever viewing a property anyway. If you are that stupid, you need to get burned once or twice to educate and enlighten you a little.

Last year, I had a rental house in Madison. Same thing happened. Scammer put it on Craigslist. Potential renter put got in contact with this person via email. Scammer said that they were handling everything since the owners had moved to Africa and were in a hurry to lease (great timing for the scammer because this was after the tornados, so rentals were flying off the shelf). Scammer said owner would take $700/month (actual was $1500/mo) and talked potential renter into sending them a security deposit.

Scammed renter showed up to property with the actual homeowner being there and said "I'm here to pick up the keys". Didn't work out to well....very upset as you could imagine.....but at the same time....this person should have figured something was up.

Ironic, I was just contemplating turning to Craigslist. We lost our house when my Navy Unit relocated from Whidbey Island, WA to Imperial Beach, CA during the market crash. Friday, I received a response to a Huntsville rental application stating that our credit check came back and requires a guarantor in order to qualify for housing.

Where else besides Craigslist do people go to find properties for rent by owners?

Valley MLS doesn't list properties for rent by owner, only those listed by RE agents and property managers.
