I am moving from NY to Toney, Alabama right outside of Huntsville this year with my soon-to-be fiancé. There's no rush, but the goal is to be out of NY by September 2017. For the last month and a half I have been job hunting without any luck. I have Customer Service Management & Sales Support experience with a Bachelor's degree in Business Mgmt and Master degree in Human Resources. I notice there are a lot of Contract Administrator jobs and that's the direction I would like to go in. Someone from the area told me there are a lot of good jobs, but many of the companies go through temp agencies with temp to perm positions. Can someone please, please, please give me some insight on the Madison County AL job market so I can at least have an idea of what battle I'm up against? Thank you in advance 🙂

I don't know specifically about the position you're looking for and the job opportunities for your position. Your education is a leg up on the competition. I will say temp services can be a gamble. A way for companies to weed out people that "fit", which basically means to see if your personality meshes with the group already there. If you're easy going and work hard then you'll probably have no problem. Also the pay will likely start lower than what you would get if you're a permanent full-time employee. Temp services also have contracts that the employees work under. When the contract runs out you never know what could happen.

I guess it's not much different than the 90 day trial periods many companies have for new hires, it just can run a lot longer.

The job market is good though. It can be a matter of timing. The best areas to work would be Redstone Arsenal and Cummings Research Park. Many jobs in Cummings Research Park are in support of those on Redstone Arsenal.

Thank you for all of the helpful info. Honestly I prefer not to go through a temp agency. I figured the job market is good out there since I noticed a lot of companies support Redstone Arsensal. My boyfriend works at a Redstone Arsenal and I'm hoping he can find out some companies that support Redstone Arsenal.

No problem. This is what this forum is all about. I'm sure you'll be fine finding a job in the area. The part that can be stressful is getting in somewhere first, but once that happens you can find your way around. Temp services are an option to just getting that kick start if you're new to the area. They might even hire you to work directly for them in their offices.

Just a thought ... but maybe a "headhunter" organization? Not sure if they cover jobs in your specialty, but my son has gone through an agency in Atlanta and has landed 2 jobs. The company pays the headhunter fee, hot the hiree.

Thank you! I've never used a headhunter before, but I'm very open to anything. I've had people tell me that companies like to hire people from "up north" because we are accustomed to a faster pace all around. While I like to think that is true, my belief is people from "up north" and especially NY(where I'm from) are viewed as loud, rude and bossy.

Nah ... no reason to believe that, unless you fit the stereotype.

Unfortunately my daughter took a new job in GA but she was well connected in the Huntsville HR community. You might consider contacting someone at NASHRM Home Page | North Alabama Society for Human Resource Management . I know they have monthly meetings for members but if you are able to speak with someone there and get down for a visit and attend a meeting there you would be able to make tons of contacts immediately. I know that once when I was thinking about getting back in the work force a while back, she simply mentioned it to a few of them and I got 5 phone calls the following Monday. It's worth a shot.

I am going to definitely look into this. I'm going to be out in Alabama in early August so in July I'm going full speed ahead in hopes of snagging an in-person interview while I'm out there. Thank you so much-this info is greatly appreciated.
