Hello everyone,
I'm looking in the Hampton Cove area for a home. The actual Hampton Cove neighborhoods are a little out of my price range but some of the surrounding subdivisions are within reach. We like the Jeff Benton neighborhoods. What is the likelihood of this area re-zoning high schools to a ghetto-fabulous school like Lee High if Huntsville High becomes over-crowded? If this were to happen 1) Home value of the house I just bought would absolutely plummet and 2) My kids would be going to a ghetto fabulous high school. Both are unacceptable.

Thanks for any insight. I'd also be concerned if they re-zoned to the County... New Hope.

Wow, I am surprised you aren't zoned for New Hope.

You are really lucky your kids get to go to Huntsville High, when Lee is so much closer.

I hope they don't change anything for your sake!

I get the sarcasm... you're funny. However, there's a real good reason people do their due diligence on school zones (yourself included perhaps), and buy accordingly. For me, I will not put my children in a poor school zone and if it means spending more on a home than I planned, so be it. So pump your holier than thou attitude if you like, I call em like I see em.

No one can predict the future, but I would think that it would be pretty unlikely for HC to be rezoned to Lee High ....probably an impossibility for a rezone to a county high school like New Hope since all that area is zoned into the city, any school those kids go to would be a HSV city school, not a Madison County school.

Hampton Cove is growing, but the remainder of the HSV high area is not, it is actually aging out. I think we could possibly see plans for a high school out in HC if crowding due to HC growth becomes a huge issue on the high school.

FYI...the new Lee High is becoming a pretty great school. The principal, Kevin Wieseman, is doing some good things, and he is a GREAT man, really cares about restoring Lee back to one of the great HSV high school programs. I have lots of respect for him, he was a great choice to take that school.

BMW....HSV High is definitely the closest high school to Hampton Cove, much closer than Lee...were you being sarcastic?

Thanks for the insight LCT. Lee High may be on the up and up, but from what I understand it is currently problematic in more ways than academically. I grew up in a similar school district, and I'll be damned if my kids do. Private schools are also an option on the table if I can work it into my budget by the time my children are of high school age. For now though, I can't (won't) risk being in a less than good school district.

Rezoning to county is out of the question if you buy in an area already zoned into the city so don't worry about that. You have very little to worry about as far as rezoning to Lee High for a couple of reasons. One is distance since Huntsville High is much closer and easier logistically than Lee and the other reason is money and influence. The people in Hampton Cove would raise so much hell, there is no way the city would ever pull off rezoning to Lee. There are two more likely scenarios with one being rezoned to the new Grissom High when it is built since it will be easy to get to from Hampton Cove and the other being a new High School being built in Hampton Cove at some point. Which will happen but when, who knows. Either way, I agree with you and would avoid Lee High at all costs for now. Maybe in about 5 years or so it will have a better reputation but we shall see.

I don't see how a new high school can be built in HC until the DOJ order is lifted. If that does happen though, Huntsville HS will really miss those HC kids.

The fact is the population segregates itself which is exactly what the city argued. If they rezone the districts and mix the population, they just all start selling houses, renting new apartments etc. and resegregate. That actually is what this thread is all about. At some point, a high school will be built in Hampton Cove.

Agreed but, at this point, DOJ approval is the only way a new high school can be built anywhere in H'ville. And, because of the current demographics of HC, the DOJ won't agree to a new school there unless they change the zoning to bring in more minorities. Hopefully, they'll get the order dropped soon.

This... I wonder where the new Grissom High school will be located and what impact it will have on the housing market in SE Huntsville...
