I am in the process of designing a house to be built. It is cheaper to build up rather than build out - I have gotten quotes. However, I have relatives that have some mobility issues that will be living in the house. Therefore, I am considering, carefully, the idea of building a two story home and installing a stairlift. I would make the stairs wider to accommodate the stairlift more comfortably. My questions are:

Has anyone had any experience with using an in-home stairlift?

Are there taxes, inspections and fees required by the local Governments? [Huntsville, Madison]

What are the upkeep/maintenance costs?

Is there a recommended dealer/installer?

I have read extensively about stairlifts on the internet but most of what I have found appears to be little more than fluff and marketing. Any actual user insights [as opposed to speculation] would be appreciated.

This would probably get more replies in the home forum.

brianjb-My sister has a stairlift in her home. She loves it and hasn't had any issues with it. She lives in Kansas City, so I'm no help with inspections, etc., but she didn't have to have any there. My Mom uses it when she is there visiting and I've ridden on it just for grins

I forgot that you have ties to the KC area, Elizabeth_G. I am actually flying up this month for a short visit.

Stair-lifts are the great addition of our daily life it works as a asset for those who faces mobility issues in their homes. After installation home stair-lift you can ride freely from one place to another without having any problems.

I've only seen a lift in one home, and the staircase was narrow enough that it was awkward for a non-rider to get around it, even with the seat folded up. A wider staircase would probably help a lot, especially if there was a handrail on both sides.
